UM Takes Top Fundraising Honors at American Heart Association Start! Heart Walk
Thousands of fitness gear-clad community members gathered at Miami’s Tropical Park on October 11 for the Start! Heart Walk, a 5K event that raised $523,000 to support the American Heart Association’s mission to prevent heart attack and stroke. NBC-6 anchor Roxanna Vargas hosted a short program to kick off the event, where she recognized the Miller School and UHealth as the “top new company” for raising $37,000 for the event, and UM Hospital employee Victor Vega as the top individual fundraiser. Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., energized the crowd when he accepted the honor. “Miami has the best doctors and nurses in the country for fighting heart attack and stroke,” said Goldschmidt, who received his first research grant from the American Heart Association, which allowed him to launch his career in cardiology. “We are proud to be their partner, proud to be UM, proud to be UHealth, and proud to bring the “U” to all of you.” For more on this story, click here. | |

Dr. José Szapocznik Spearheads Eighth National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse Conference The National Hispanic Science Network (NHSN) on Drug Abuse, chaired by José Szapocznik, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and associate dean for community development, held its eighth annual conference, "Community, Behavioral and Molecular Sciences in Addictive Disorders," October 1-3 in Bethesda, Maryland. The conference was an outstanding success, attracting more than 220 participants from ten different countries. Nora Volkow, M.D., director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), presented the conference’s keynote address on "Imaging Obesity and Addiction," which examined the common effects on the brain’s dopaminergic system and executive functioning that occur in obesity and addiction, with the hope of leveraging the science from one disorder to inform the other. The conference also featured several special interest breakout sessions, as well as mentoring and training activities to improve grant writing skills and overall scientific productivity. A session on research priorities and funding opportunities with NIDA, and a presentation by the National Institutes of Health Office of Intramural Training and Education were new to the conference and well-received by participants. Other activities included an international poster session, and a "New Investigators in Hispanic Drug Abuse" research panel. “One of the most important functions of the NHSN is to mentor the next generation of scientists working in Hispanic drug abuse," said Szapocznik. "The conference provided a broad range of mentoring experiences for young investigators, as well as opportunities to meet NIH scientists, learn about the NIH process and to discuss their research." New Procedures on Resubmitting NIH Applications The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has changed their policy for resubmitting or amending applications in an effort to fund high-quality applications sooner with fewer resubmissions. If you are applying for NIH funding here’s what the new policy means to you: • If you submit an original or compete a renewal application that is due on January 25, 2009 or later, the NIH will only accept a single amended application. James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program, Team Science Program Submissions Now Being Accepted The Office of Research is now accepting internal submissions for the James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program, Team Science Program. The award supports broadly-based, multi-disciplinary research projects with well-defined major objectives or themes addressing the prevention, diagnosis, treatment or cure of tobacco-related diseases. The program goal is to increase grant applications and competitively position Florida institutions for high-level federal funding. Each grant proposal must encompass at least three but no more than five interrelated individual research projects. Team Science Program projects are distinguished from collections of individual projects because they have a demonstrated synergy between investigators and shared research resources and goals. Complete details are available at http://floridabiomed.com/funding_je.html#callgrant. For more information or to submit your project, please send a two-page summary that includes a list of at least three interrelated research projects, shared research resources and goals, and an NIH/NSF bioscketch to Muriel Industrious at mindustrious@med.miami.edu by Friday, October 24. HIPAA Security Awareness Update: "Watch Out for E-Mail Spam and Scams Targeting U.S. Presidential Election As the countdown to the U.S. presidential election approaches, be aware that there are numerous e-mail spam campaigns which use the election as a social engineering mechanism to install malicious software on your PC. One example is an e-mail circulating with false news of a sex scandal involving one of the candidates. Recipients of the e-mail are encouraged to view the video. Users who click the link are shown a pornographic video, but while the video plays, malicious software is installed on the person's PC. Clicking on the link allows the attacker to scan the PC for existing vulnerabilities and exploit such weaknesses if the PC is not adequately protected. Other examples include amusing games allowing you to choose or express support for your candidate. Dr. Thomas L.
