UHealth Launch is Today!

The internal launch of the University of Miami Health System -- UHealth -- officially gets underway today on the Miller School campus and tomorrow at University of Miami Hospital.

All faculty, staff and students should have received their special invitations to visit the Welcome to UHealth Centers and to receive a special UHealth gift. If you haven’t yet received your invitation in the mail, there will be extra invitations at the events. Faculty, staff and students just need to show their IDs and sign in.

The festivities get underway today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Schoninger Quadrangle, and tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at University of Miami Hospital in the first floor seminar center. In addition to receiving your special UHealth gift, refreshments will be available and you can enjoy the premier of the UHealth video, "There is only one U."

UHealth is a comprehensive network of three university hospitals (University of Miami Hospital, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute), three major affiliated hospitals (Jackson Memorial Hospital, Holtz Children’s Hospital and Miami VA Medical Center), and more than two dozen outpatient facilities.

2008 World Health Day and National Public Health Week Symposium: "Global Climate Change and Your Health"

In recognition of the 2008 World Health Day and National Public Health Week, the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is holding a day-long symposium titled "Global Climate Change and Your Health" on Monday, April 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium.

This year’s theme for World Health Day and National Public Health Week is protecting health from climate change. The World Health Organization is hoping to draw worldwide attention to the need to protect our health from the adverse effects of climate change.

Experts from across the Miller School of Medicine, RSMAS and the Coral Gables campus will take part in the day-long dialogue about the challenges and risks to our health from climate change and what we can do to mitigate the damage.

“Climate change will have a big impact on our health in the coming years," said José Szapocznik, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Miller School. "Because of our proximity to the tropics, South Florida is vulnerable to diseases that are typically found in neighboring warmer climates. If we don’t recognize the problems now and work toward solutions, it could be too late. We call on everyone across the University and the South Florida community to come together for this important conference on the future of our global health."

For more information, contact Fernanda M. Kuchkarian, M.P.H., at 305-243-4312 or by e-mail at fkuchkarian@med.miami.edu.

HIPAA Security Awareness Update: "Encryption: An Essential Tool of Information Security and Privacy"

Advances in communications and computing technologies allow for easy information storage and transmission. But when information is sensitive, we must be careful and employ safeguards to protect it from unauthorized access, modification and disclosure. One such safeguard is encryption. Encryption is a procedure that scrambles information in a way that is decipherable only to authorized individuals or computers. Encryption should be used whenever sensitive data may be mobile, either online or on a disk; such data include e-mail, electronic file transfers, and information on laptops, USB drives and CDs.

For more information on encryption, please visit http://www.med.miami.edu/hipaa/public/x373.xml. If you have questions related to this or any other HIPAA Privacy or Security related issue, please contact the Office of HIPAA Privacy and Security at hipaaprivacy@med.miami.edu.
