Medical Campus Welcomes Students From FAU

In 2004, 16 students began their medical studies at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), as part of the ground-breaking educational partnership created between the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and FAU. Students from that class, now in their third year, are now in Miami for two years of rotations.

Third-year medical student Coleen Waite is one of those students. She has enjoyed the intimate environment of studying in Boca Raton. Now that she has started her clinical rotations, Waite and her 15 FAU classmates are learning about life on the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center campus.

“I would recommend the experience to any student who is looking for a great learning environment,” Waite said.  “This is a great opportunity for anyone who is open to experiencing the positives and negatives that comes with being a pioneer of a program for which great things are hoped.”

FAU students who started in 2004, 2005, and 2006 will complete rotations in Miami. After that, those who start in 2007 will spend all four years of medical school at the Boca campus. With area hospitals working with FAU/UM to form residency programs, university officials expect that 256 medical students will be enrolled by 2010-2011. All students enrolled in UMSM@FAU are considered University of Miami medical students and will receive their degrees from UM.

“We are especially proud of these student’s pioneering spirit,” said Mark O’Connell, M.D., senior associate dean for medical education at the UM Miller School of Medicine. “Much like those students who forged a pathway for the School of Medicine in the 1950s, these students are ushering in a new era for the Miller School of Medicine.”

Dell Battery Recall

The Medical Information Technology Help Desk can help answer questions you might have on whether the battery to your Dell Laptop is among those being recalled. Last week Dell announced the recall of batteries shipped to customers between April 1, 2004, and July 18, 2006, for models of Dell Latitude™, Inspiron™, XPS™ and Dell Precision Mobile Workstation™ notebook computers. Some of these batteries may overheat, which could pose a risk of fire.

First, find out if your Dell notebook battery is subject to the recall by visiting http://it.med.miami.edu/x984.xml.  Not all models sold during the affected period contain batteries subject to the recall.

If so, you can take advantage of Dell’s free battery exchange. (Dell recommends that batteries subject to recall not be used while awaiting a replacement, althought you may remove the battery and continue to use your notebook computer with the AC adapter only). If you have questions please write help@med.miami.edu or call 305-243-5999.
