Miller School of Medicine Appoints Vice President for Medical Administration and Chief Operating Officer

William J. Donelan, former executive vice president and chief operating officer of Duke University Health System and vice chancellor for health affairs of Duke University, has been named the University of Miami's vice president for medical administration and the chief operating and strategy officer of the Miller School of Medicine and University of Miami Health System, President Donna E. Shalala announced today.

"Bill Donelan built Duke University Health System into a worldwide leader in patient care and a financial powerhouse to support medical research and education," Shalala said. "In partnership with Dean Pascal Goldschmidt, Bill will lead the aggressive expansion of the University of Miami Health System, and our South Florida community and patients from around the world will be the beneficiaries."

The opportunity to help propel the region's only academic medical center into the highest ranks of university health care and research attracted Donelan to Miami. He joins Goldschmidt, the former chairman of Duke's Department of Medicine who became senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Miller School in April.

"It takes a long career to encounter and recognize the geniuses of the organization of top-tier health centers," Goldschmidt said. "I had the opportunity to experience the talent of Bill Donelan while occupying a leadership position at Duke, and thought that if I ever had the chance to lead a medical school he would be the individual I would want to recruit as a partner on my team to build the best clinical environment for our patients.

"Bill believes that leaders achieve organizational success by effectively guiding team efforts," Goldschmidt added. "This is a philosophy that President Shalala and I share with him."

Donelan's career at Duke began in 1969. He was vice chancellor for administration and chief financial officer of Duke University Medical Center, and before that director and chief operating officer of Duke University Hospital.

"Bill not only occupied most of the top administrative positions of an academic medical center, but was also instrumental in the creation of the Duke Health System," Goldschmidt said. "We are incredibly lucky to have him on our team."

Donelan said he sees a wonderful opportunity for the University of Miami to have "a very important impact on the health and well-being of the citizens of Miami-Dade County and the broader region."

"In addition, as the city of Miami and the county continue to develop as a gateway and commercial center for Latin America and the Caribbean Basin, the positive influence of the University¹s academic medicine can impact people throughout this broad geography," Donelan said.

"My interest in bringing my career-long professional experience in all of the missions of academic medicine is to help build a platform to continue to grow the excellence of the UM medical enterprise and to position us to make significant contributions to the welfare of the region."
