Medical Students’ Poster Receives Honor at National Meeting

A research poster authored by medical students Jorge Alex Alvarez and Nathan T. Connell, along with Alex J. Mechaber, M.D., associate professor of medicine, and director, Clinical Skills Program and Doctoring Courses, and Christopher Basil, M.D. ’04, was singled out for honors at the American College of Physicians annual national meeting April 6 through 8. Of more than 1,600 abstracts submitted for the medical students and associates section, 50 were accepted for the medical student poster presentation. The Miller School of Medicine’s poster was one of the four winning posters, the only student poster from the state of Florida.

The poster and abstract, entitled “Seen a Doctor Lately?: Barriers to Follow-Up Adherence at South Florida Community Health Fairs,” assessed the adherence barriers of South Floridians seen at medical student coordinated community health fairs.

“The project highlights the great work being done at our student directed health fairs, which is also very meaningful,” says Mechaber. Several students who have already graduated or are about to graduate helped assist with the project, says Connell.

The research was also supported by the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), and the trip to present the poster at the conference was supported by the John K. Robinson Grant for Student Initiatives from the University of Miami Medical Alumni Association.

new  Medical School Announces New Employee Referral Bonus Program for Hires

There is strong competition for talent in the Miami-Dade/Broward labor markets with the lowest unemployment rates in more than 20 years.  A recent national survey showed that employee referral programs were rated one of the highest source of external hires and are known for producing high quality applicants since employees have a vested interest in ensuring referred candidates are good matches.

Medical Human Resources has now implemented an employee referral program at the Miller School of Medicine. A $500 bonus (minus applicable taxes and withholdings) will be paid to an eligible employee of the Miller School of Medicine for someone they refer who is hired into a designated position.

Designated positions are those positions that are eligible for the staff referral program - they will be noted in the job posting on the medical school's career website.  Only those who refer external candidates qualify for this program (referrals for currently employed UM employees or temporaries are not eligible).

All currently employed regular staff (full or part time) employed at the Miller School of Medicine who have completed their initial probationary period are eligible to participate in the employee referral program. For more information, please use the contact link at the medical school's career web site (http://careers.med.miami.edu).

Honors

Glen Barber, Ph.D.  , professor of microbiology and immunology, and Jean-Marie Parel, Ph.D., research associate professor at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, are two of the recipients of the 2006 Provost’s Award for Scholarly Activity.

Dr. Barber focuses on understanding mechanisms of innate immunity to viral infection and malignant disease. His laboratory’s work is crucial because gaining insight into the processes of the innate immune process could lead to the development of translational research programs involving the design of novel vaccines and therapeutics to combat disease.

Dr. Parel heads a laboratory that uses biophysical approaches to provide practical solutions for the treatment of eye diseases. Bascom Palmer’s Ophthalmic Biophysics Center, which Parel cofounded in 1970 and now directs, developed a synthetic cornea that corrects bilateral blindness. Parel, who holds a secondary appointment in the College of Engineering, also studies the biocompatibility of polymers designed to mimic the natural cornea’s optical and biomechanical properties, as well as laser surgical techniques to improve the visual acuity of ophthalmic prosthesis.

The study will look at single dose, dose escalations of a study drug (0.5 mg, 2.0 mg and 5.0 mg) and a placebo. The study will determine how well the study drug blocks CCR5 receptors and is tolerated. Participants must be 18 and older, not taking antiretroviral therapy for at least three months and have a viral load greater than 5,000 and a CD4 count greater than 250. Must be willing to do six-hour drug level monitoring. Up to $250 provided.

• A therapeutic HIV-1 vaccine study. Participants must be 18 to 50 years of age, receiving antiretroviral therapy, have an HIV-1 RNA level less than 500 copies/ml for at least two years and a CD4 cell count 500/ccm or higher. Up to $150 in food certificates provided.
