Momentum Campaign Surpasses Billion-Dollar Mark Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami has passed the $1 billion mark ahead of schedule, and the campaign goal will be increased by $250 million to be reached by the end of 2007.

“When we decided to launch the Momentum campaign, we knew we had the institutional commitment and community support to reach our goal," said UM President Donna E. Shalala. "What has been very exciting is that we have done so ahead of schedule, and our Board of Trustees plans to keep going. The Momentum campaign has truly lived up to its name.”

The total of $1,028,578,781 raised to date is from a record 104,364 donors, of whom 167 have given $1 million or more. The medical school is the largest beneficiary of the Momentum campaign, with donations totalling $630 million.

The largest gift to date is $100 million from the family of the late Leonard M. Miller, a longtime South Florida businessman, UM Board of Trustees chairman, and philanthropist.

For more information on the Momentum campaign, visit www.miami.edu/campaign.

new  UM Opens First Concierge Medical Practice

On Wednesday, the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine opened its first “concierge” medical practice in Key Biscayne. The practice was started in partnership with Boca Raton-based MDVIP, one of the largest networks of concierge practices.

Concierge medicine is seen as one solution to the problem of patients spending too much time waiting to see their doctors, and physicians not having enough time to spend with their patients. For a set annual fee, patients receive extensive preventive medical care. Robert R. Kemper, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., a board certified internist on the faculty of the Miller School of Medicine will run the practice.

Presentations

Joseph Neary, Ph.D.,   research professor, Department of Pathology, recently participated in the Novartis Foundation Symposium entitled “Purinergic Signalling in Neuron-Glia Interactions” in London. Dr. Neary’s presentation was entitled “P2 Receptor Signaling, Astrocyte Proliferation, and Cell-Cell Interactions.” He was selected as one of 25 scientists worldwide to participate in this prestigious series of symposia, which has been in existence for 50 years, covering a broad range of topics at the forefront of scientific research.

The Women’s Cancer League and Partners  recently visited the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center where they met with and presented a check for $60,000 to renowned physician-scientist Joyce Slingerland, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P., director, Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at UM/Sylvester.

The donation from the Women’s Cancer League and Partners helped create a developmental grants program that provides a mechanism for funding new projects at the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute. This program encourages new investigators in the field of breast cancer and provides seed funding for small grants to support development of larger projects that can be submitted to the National Cancer Institute for funding.

Human Subjects ResearchBack to top

The AIDS Clinical Research Unit, directed by Margaret Fischl, M.D., is recruiting participants for the following studies:

• An investigational smallpox vaccine in patients with HIV and without HIV. The vaccine uses a modified vaccinia virus, which is not as strong as the smallpox virus and cannot grow well enough in human cells to cause disease. Participants must be 18 to 34 years of age, have never received smallpox vaccinations, and have no history of heart or skin problems. HIV patients must be taking antiretroviral therapy and have a viral load of less than 50,000 and a CD4 cell count greater than 200. Up to $275 provided and free HIV testing is done.

• An investigational CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) entry inhibitor for patients with HIV. The study will look at single dose, dose escalations of a study drug (0.5 mg, 2.0 mg and 5.0 mg) and a placebo. The study will determine how well the study drug blocks CCR5 receptors and is tolerated. Participants must be 18 and older, not taking antiretroviral therapy for at least three months and have a viral load greater than 5,000 and a CD4 count greater than 250.
