t the dean’s commencement dinner, instead of one “Teacher of the Year,” 18 longtime faculty members were honored for their commitment to medical education—more than 600 years in total.

All of those recognized are members of the basic science faculty. The “newest” faculty joined the School of Medicine in 1974; the most senior faculty member—Irwin Berman, Ph.D.—joined the school 45 years ago in 1959.

The recipients of the 2004 Faculty Educators Awards are:

Arba L. Agar Jr., Ph.D.,
is a research associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. He joined the School of Medicine in 1974.
Ellen Barrett, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. She joined the faculty in 1974.
John Barrett, Ph.D., is a professor of physiology and biophysics. He joined the faculty in 1974.
Ronald Clark, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, has been on the faculty since 1974.
Joanne Howard, Ph.D., is an adjunct associate professor of cell biology and anatomy. She joined the faculty in 1975.
Arthur Bassett, Ph.D., is a professor of pharmacology and surgery who joined the faculty in 1973.
Laphalle Fuller, Ph.D., has been a professor of microbiology since 1973.
David Landowne, Ph.D., a professor of physiology and biophysics, joined the faculty in 1972.
Lincoln Potter, M.D., is professor emeritus in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology as well as chair of the Medical Curriculum Steering Committee. He’s been on the faculty since 1972.
Karl Magleby, Ph.D., is professor and chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He joined the School of Medicine in 1971.
Robert Warren, Ph.D., interim chair and associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, joined the faculty in 1971.
Anthony Caswell, Ph.D., professor of molecular and cellular pharmacology, has been on the faculty for more than 30 years.
Diana Lopez, Ph.D., is a professor of microbiology and immunology. She joined the faculty in 1971.
Rudolph Werner, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology who has been on staff since 1970.
Frans Huijing, Ph.D., is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology who joined the faculty in 1968.
William Whelan, Ph.D., is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. He’s been on the faculty since 1967.
Raul De Gasperi, M.D., emeritus faculty member, retired from the Department of Physiology in 2003 but still does small group teaching. He joined the faculty in 1962.
Irwin Berman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, joined the facultyin 1959.
