Miami Vice Benefits CURED

Celebrities, actors, and faculty mingled at a unique premiere benefiting the Department of Urology. Chairman of Urology Mark Soloway, M.D., hosted the East Coast premiere of the new movie Miami Vice at the Lincoln Theatre in South Beach in July. Hundreds of patrons paid $250 apiece to walk the red carpet and enjoy the film. Hundreds more attended an exclusive after-party at Mansion Nightclub, where they bid on high-end auction items and were entertained by singer Brooke Hogan, the daughter of wrestler Hulk Hogan.

Soloway honored Miami Vice director Michael Mann and his wife, Summer, with the 2006 CURED Humanitarian Award for their help supporting the Center for Urologic Research, Education and Diseases at the UM Miller School. Proceeds from the event will benefit CURED, which will support research on prostate, kidney, bladder, and other genitourinary cancers.

Ob/Gyn Chief Residents Get Final Critique

Graduating chief residents of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology received one last opportunity to obtain feedback on the research they spent the last four years developing. Mary Jo O’Sullivan, M.D., Ob/Gyn professor emeritus, critiqued the residents’ presentations during the all-day affair at the Rosenstiel Auditorium.

“The Ob/Gyn Chief Residents Research Day is a stepping stone for future research,” says Zusel Matos, M.H.S.A., Ob/Gyn residency coordinator. While much of the research has already been submitted in journals, future residents can also take over the studies and tweak them. Awards were also given out in various categories, such as highest Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology scores and greatest compassion toward patients.
