APPOINTMENTS
Thomas J. Balkany M.D., Hotchkiss Professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, has been elected to the board of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. His two-year term started at the academy’s S
eptember meeting in Orlando.

M. Judith Donovan Post, M.D., professor of radiology, was elected treasurer of the American Society of Neuroradiology at the group’s 41st annual meeting in Washington D.C. She will serve a two-year term as treasurer and also serve as a member of the society’s executive committee.

AWARDS
Alex J. Mechaber, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, received the 2003 Outstanding Teacher Award from the American College of Physicians, Florida Chapter, at the chapter’s scientific meeting in St. Petersburg.

Geoffrey Miller, assistant director of emergency medical skills training at the Center for Research in Medical Education, was named Florida’s EMS Educator of the Year by the Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services at the organization’ summer meeting in Orlando.

Victoria Behar Mitrani, Ph.D., research assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has received a Research Enhancement Award from the NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health. The award provides $300,000 in funding for a one-year period. The study, “Family Therapy Mechanisms in HIV-positive Women in Drug Recovery,” recently received its original funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

PRESENTATIONS
Charles Buscemi, A.R.N.P., a nurse practitioner in the Department of Medicine, and Christine Williams, D.N.Sc., associate professor in the School of Nursing, had their abstract, “Cultural Differences in Stroke Recovery Among Hispanic American Veterans,” accepted for presentation at the Gerontological Society of America’s Annual Scientific Meeting this month in San Diego.

Sara J. Czaja, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, recently presented a plenary address, “Information Technology for Geriatric Populations,” at the Eleventh International Congress of the International Psychogeriatric Association in Chicago.


PUBLICATIONS
The September issue of Archives of Ophthalmology featured an editorial by John G. Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Clarkson was asked to write the editorial, “Training in Ophthalmology is Critical for All Physicians,” as part of a theme issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association devoted to medical education.

Anne Burdick, M.D., M.P.H., professor of dermatology, was one of the authors of “Use of Genetic Profiling in Leprosy to Discriminate Clinical Forms of the Disease,” published in the September 12 issue of Science.

Murray Epstein, M.D., professor of medicine, has finished editing the third edition of Calcium Antagonists in Clinical Medicine, the premier textbook in its field. It has recently received positive reviews in several key journals, including the Journal of Hypertension. The book reviews the entire spectrum of cardiovascular and renal diseases and includes contributions from several faculty members: Ronald Goldberg, M.D., Nanette Bishopric, M.D., Keith Webster, Ph.D., Simon Chakko, M.D., and Arthur Bassett, Ph.D.

Kevin Maher, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, has written the chapter “Deconstructing the Immunology of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,” now published in The Handbook of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
