Science Alliance of the New York Academy of Sciences Comes to Miller School

cademic institutions from Sweden to California have discovered that you don’t have to be in New York to benefit from membership in the Science Alliance of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS). Now University of Miami Miller School of Medicine graduate students and postdocs can also take advantage of that program.

Last month Richard Bookman, Ph.D., associate dean for research and graduate studies, hosted NYAS leadership in Miami as they kicked off UM’s new relationship with the organization. “The Miller School of Medicine is providing a one-year NYAS membership to all its biomedical Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows,” says Bookman.

More than 3,000 students and postdocs have joined the Science Alliance since it was launched about three years ago. Membership enables students to access NYAS e-briefings, including small conferences on hot topics through the Science Alliance web portal, and receive reports on career development events they may have missed in person.

The Science Alliance membership is another step toward creating a regional center of science research excellence. “We will reach out to Scripps Florida, Florida International University, and Florida Atlantic University to build a South Florida community of scientists,” Bookman says.
