Kool
Kids Mural Shown at the Mailman Center
An eye-opening photographic
mural created by the Kool Kids—a
group of young people perinatally infected with HIV—is currently
on display in the lobby of the Mailman Center for Child Development.
Sponsored by the Green Family Foundation and created under the theme “Through
Their Eyes,” the mural provides a look at life from the perspective
of these children, who are served by the Division of Infectious Diseases
and Immunology in the Department of Pediatrics. The mural made an earlier
stop at the state capitol building in Tallahassee, where it was on
display for World AIDS Day, December 1.

Commissioner ‘Claus’ Delivers
Toys
Holiday festivities may seem a distant memory, but
hundreds of Miami-Dade children are still celebrating—with new books,
board games, and other toys—thanks to the Miller School Department
of Pediatrics. On December 15, Santa Claus-clad Miami-Dade Commissioner
Jose “Pepe” Diaz arrived at the Schoninger Research Quadrangle
on a fire truck before settling into his throne, where he greeted children
one by one and gave each of them a bag filled with presents. While
waiting to see Santa, the children and their families enjoyed free
refreshments, arts and crafts, and storytelling. Party in the Park Supports UM/Sylvester Research
Eleven “model” UM/Sylvester patients graced
the runway in November arm-in-arm with their physicians for Party in
the Park, a fashion show at Merrick Park in Coral Gables focused on
inner beauty that raises money and increases awareness about the importance
of cancer research. The event, which also featured food from top local
restaurants, was a huge success, attracting more than 500 guests and
raising more than $100,000 for cancer research at UM/Sylvester. “Our
patients are thriving survivors who inspire us with their beauty and
their radiance,” said W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., director of UM/Sylvester. “We
escorted them through their treatment, and now they are strong enough
to escort us down the runway.”
Moore Presents ‘Best Work’
Mary Moore, Ph.D., executive director of the Louis
Calder Memorial Library, presented the prestigious Ralph H. and Ruth
F. Gross Lecture in November. After only three months in her role at
Calder, Moore was selected to present to the medical campus community.
Her lecture, “Our Best Work,” took a look at the library’s
cultural innovation. Following the lecture and a reception, plans for
a first-floor revitalization project were revealed. |
