Tuesday, April 20, 2010 1 p.m. NHSN Videoconference: “From the Lab to the Community and Back: Research that Makes a Difference in Real Time"

The National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse (NHSN) will host Hortensia Amaro, Ph.D., associate dean, distinguished professor of health sciences and counseling psychology, and director of the Institute on Urban Health Research at Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences in Boston, for a videoconference today (Tuesday) at 1 p.m. in the Clinical Research Building, conference room 989.

In a distinguished career that has spanned scholarly research, translation of science to practice, top-level policy consultation, and service on four Institute of Medicine committees, Dr. Amaro has dramatically advanced our understanding of substance abuse disorders treatment. Her presentation titled "From the Lab to the Community and Back: Research that Makes a Difference in Real Time" will discuss her groundbreaking studies on clinical strategies for treating women with co-occurring drug addiction, mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder that have provided strong evidence in supporting integrated treatment. Through her dedication and vision, Dr. Amaro has forged vital connections between public health research and practice, received numerous honors for her work and served on review and advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The University of Houston and Louisiana State University also will participate via videoconference with an opportunity for all audiences to interact at the end of the presentation.
