Swinging for the Fences—and the Future

About 1,000 students celebrated their hard-earned degrees last week at two ceremonies featuring two inspiring individuals with close ties to the U—retired Major League Baseball star Alex Rodriguez, who urged them to "swing for the fences," and Magic Leap, Inc. founder Rony Abovitz, who shared his advice in the form of a letter to the future.

With more than 26 U.S. patents and 40 inventions, including a machine that isolates insulin-producing cells from the pancreas, Camillo Ricordi, the director of the Diabetes Research Institute, has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.

Among the 20 inaugural Roddenberry Fellows, Professor Caroline Bettinger-López will use her $50,000 grant to scale her COURAGE (Community Oriented and United Responses to Address Gender Violence and Equality) in Policing Project and, as she says, "move from #MeToo to #RealChange."

Answering the Commuter Challenge

More than 250 faculty, staff and students joined the South Florida Commuter Challenge last month, logging more than 7,400 miles on alternative transportation using the RideFlag mobile app, which undergraduate student Tracey C. Dominique, the winner of four Miami Heat tickets, said "helped me to see the beauty in commuting.”

Spreading Holiday Cheer

Members of the track and field team spent an afternoon at the Boys and Girls Club in Miami last week spreading a little holiday cheer, playing games with local children, and passing out some early Christmas gifts to those in need.

Ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press poll last week, the men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 9-0 against George Washington on Saturday, their best start under head coach Jim Larrañaga.
