MILLER SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Henri R. Ford, M.D. has been named dean of the Miller School of Medicine. The Haitian-born pediatric surgeon will join UM on June 1. Dr. Ford is currently the senior vice president and chief of surgery at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, vice dean of medical education, and professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Taking another step to make UM the hemispheric university, President Julio Frenk and Pablo Navas, president of the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at building collaborative bridges between the two institutions.

UM researchers collaborated with an ocean engineering company to develop a biodegradable drifter that won't become marine debris when it's done transmitting valuable data on ocean currents.

The Lakeside Patio was bustling with maritime activities, games, and music at the annual Hurricane Challenge. Graduate students from the Physical Therapy program hosted about 200 local students with disabilities at the Under the Sea-themed event, which has raised awareness of the challenges people with physical disabilities face.
