CAMNER CENTER

Preparing for Finals

With final exams starting tomorrow, you may be wondering how you can best support your student as they prepare to finish the semester strong.  Although many students experience a heightened sense of stress as finals approach, there are many things you can do as a parent to help!

First, remind your student of how hard they’ve worked, how much they’ve accomplished, and how proud of them you are.  Next, encourage them to create a distraction-free study zone and have a designated study space where they can be productive.  Send them a care package with balanced and healthy snacks and remind them to get their body moving and plenty of sleep so they can stay mentally focused and healthy.  Study schedules can really help students break up their studying into more manageable parts.  Your student can schedule an appointment with a learning specialist at the Camner Center and we can help them prioritize their studying and teach them tips on how to prepare for finals.

Best of luck to all your students and remember we are here to help!

HOUSING AND RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Be Prepared for Housing Closing

It is our hope that your student is finishing their Spring 2022 semester off in a positive manner and you look forward to their coming home very soon.  Before they do, there are few items of note we wanted you to take note of:

  • Be sure to check out our website for important details on move-out dates, guidelines/procedures on how your student can properly move out to avoid charges, information on how they can donate unwanted items, etc.
  • Have conversations with your student now about how to prepare in advance of closing so that their stress will be minimized and they can focus on their academic needs as it pertains to their final exams or projects. Students will receive email newsletters in addition to information from the student leaders in their Residential College/Community.
  • We will be offering summer housing during summer session C. More details on how a student can sign up can be also be found on our website as well as rate information.

For all the latest updates, encourage your student to monitor their University email address and to visit HRL's website.  If there are any questions or concerns, you can contact housing@miami.edu or 305-284-4505.

FROM DR. WHITELY'S DESK

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

A Note from the VSPA

There is much to be excited for as we quickly approach the conclusion of the semester. Our students have accomplished much in the classroom, student organizations, athletic arenas, internships, and so much more. We are so grateful for the work that you, our families, continue to do to ensure our students have support as they learn and grow.

This summer, I hope that you and your family take some time to rest and recuperate. Many of us, our students included, have experienced challenges throughout this year. It is important to engage in reflection even as we continue seeking our goals. In the Division of Student Affairs, we spend the summer preparing for the following year. We consider what initiatives, services, and programs empowered students to learn and grow and what future plans will continue this same path.

Whether your student is graduating in just a few days, preparing for a summer internship, or anything in between, we are so glad that you and your family are part of the ’Cane community. Congratulations to our graduating seniors! I look forward to celebrating Commencement [HYPERLINK: https://commencement.miami.edu/] with family and friends at the Watsco Center next week. If your student will be continuing in the fall, we look forward to welcoming them back. I wish you and your family health and wellness. If you ever need anything, please do not hesitate to reach out.

STUDENT VOICE

ORIENTATION AND COMMUTER STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

Graduating

As my undergraduate career comes to a close, it has been an honor to call UM my second home. As a transfer student, I was eager to take on any opportunity I was offered because I knew my time at UM was limited. I learned to step outside of my comfort zone, find new passions I didn’t know I would love, but most importantly learn to apply all these valuable skills to my future career. I would be lying if I didn’t have regret, such as studying abroad, changing my major one more time, or enjoying certain moments more.

I want to personally thank the Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement and Department of Student Activities and Student Organizations for seeing something in me and giving me the opportunity to bring any idea to life, build a community, and let me flourish into a better student leader. To every administrator and staff member I have encountered, thank you for your support and motivating me to continue to do my best even when everything felt like the world was falling apart.

Every student brings something special to the U, it’s what makes the saying ‘Canes Care for Canes so special. Remember to take it all in and never let a simple no stop your decision. I can’t wait to cross the stage and see where I’ll be headed too next. Once a Cane, forever a Cane! LYGC!

Student Well-being

WELLNESS AND RECREATION

Summer is Coming

Summer is just around the corner! Your student will have successfully completed final projects and final examinations and ready to take the summer to rest. They may be exhausted from the sheer amount of work they just completed to get to this point. As a family member, you may be wondering how you can support your students' physical wellbeing during summer vacation. Look no further, we’ve got you covered!

Remind your student that physical activity is one of the most important aspects of health and wellbeing. Physical activity is anything that gets the body moving. Adults should move more and sit less throughout the day. Encouraging your student to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day can have substantial health benefits. Additional health benefits are gained by engaging in physical activity beyond the equivalent of 300 minutes a week.

The great news is, you can encourage your students to participate in more structured physical activities. Participating in group exercise classes or personal training sessions is a good way to stay active with a community and with guidance. Most fitness centers in your area will offer these services already but if you don’t have access to a gym, no problem! We offer virtual group exercise classes and personal training that you can participate in from the comfort of your own home.

For a complete schedule of classes you can do from home, follow this link.
