FROM DR. WHITELY'S DESK

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Finishing the semester strong

We are quickly approaching the conclusion of the spring semester, and what a semester it has been! Students have hosted incredible programs including What Matters to U featuring Tabitha Brown and Pitbull, Taste of Africa, Greek Week, SportsFest, and so many more.

Students have worked hard to enjoy their campus opportunities while also finding success in the classroom, at internships, and on the court. Many will be celebrating their accomplishments this year with recognition ceremonies like Celebration of Involvement and student organization banquets. I am so appreciative of all that they have done and continue to do for our ’Canes community.

I also wish a warm congratulations to the Class of 2022. This class has shown resilience and courage through a two-year pandemic, and the world awaits them. I am excited to see how they will go forth and make their mark as ’Canes. It will be wonderful to celebrate Commencement in May at the Watsco Center on campus.

For students who will be returning in the fall, April is the time to prepare for possible internship opportunities and finalize classes for the upcoming semester. Students should prepare to meet with their advisors and pick out courses that will help them to achieve their degrees. If they have not already done so, it is important to consider how they will be prepared for the final exams or project. Academic resources—such as tutoring, the writing lab, or math lab—or mental health and other well-being resources may be important to consider now.

If you or your student need anything, do not hesitate to reach out.

STUDENT VOICE

ORIENTATION AND COMMUTER STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

Pacing myself to be successful

Midterm season is upon us, which means the spring semester is cruising right along. After Spring Break, I started feeling burned out from the semester. When I feel like this at times, it is important to take a step back and press pause. The University offers various events that help students take a break from studying. I tend to go out to dinner or attend an event with friends to keep my mind off studying for a bit.

We have a saying that many hear throughout the semester, ’Canes Care for ’Canes. My friends and I always watch out for each other and make sure we are pacing ourselves and not pushing past our limits. If one of them or I need to vent, I know I can go to my friends or even the professional staff I surround myself with.

In keeping with the wellness theme, the University’s Counseling Center continues to offer students a safe place to meet with certified professionals through Telemental Health either over the phone or through video conferencing. While I have always seen that the University supports students in any way they can, it is always comforting to know I can call my family and friends to vent or be open about how I am feeling. I know I speak on behalf of my peers when I say, "thank you for always being there." Every phone call, text, and FaceTime you provide to us make our days that much better!”
