OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Emergency preparedness information at the peak of hurricane season

We were fortunate to have been spared from the impacts of Hurricane Dorian, but storms like this demonstrate why being prepared is so important. Students living on- and off- campus did an excellent job preparing as Hurricane Dorian approached the Florida coast. But we also recognize the next storm may be different and it’s critical to ensure we remain ready. Safety is the University of Miami's top service standard and keeping our campuses safe requires the involvement of every member of the University community.

We are asking ’Canes families to continue to help with ensuring students on- and off- campus have taken the necessary steps to prepare for hurricanes and other emergencies. Encourage students to enter their mobile numbers in CaneLink to receive emergency alerts and regularly check their UM email for Storm Advisories. Students and families can also follow @UMiamiENN on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram for more detailed updates.

Additionally, families are encouraged to help students develop a hurricane evacuation plan. Students living on-campus will be directed to self-evacuate if a category 3 or greater storm is forecast to directly impact Miami. Students living off-campus can find out if they live in an evacuation zone by clicking here.

Lastly, please ensure your child has saved the number for UM Police (305-284-6666) in their mobile phones and encourage them to report suspicious or unusual activity.

September is National Preparedness Month and during this time we are reminded that preparedness works!

CANELINK

CaneLink access for families

While enrolled in high school, legal guardians had access to all educational records of their student. However, once a student enrolls in a post-secondary institution like UM, all rights revert to the student only.

Since we know that students generally work with their families to navigate the various aspects of UM, students can share their protected information with a family member/designee via proxy/delegate access.

Contact the Office of the University Registrar for more information.

FROM DR. WHITELY'S DESK

VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Starting off on the right foot

As you know, we recently managed the potential impacts of Hurricane Dorian. Safety is our number one priority. We did not evacuate our campus, although many of our students left the South Florida area for the long weekend. Our residential colleges and University Village along with on-campus dining halls remained open throughout the threat of Hurricane Dorian. Our university was careful when considering when to begin again so as to ensure safety and to minimize the impacts on our academic calendar. We have encouraged faculty to practice leniency with students who encounter challenges in traveling or who have extenuating family circumstances. While we are extremely grateful to not experience the devastating impacts of Hurricane Dorian, we hope that your family remains safe. If your family was directly impacted and you need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

With the start of our fall semester, our students have started campus jobs, research, involvements, and classes, maybe a few have already taken a quiz or two. All our sports teams are in their fall seasons, including our football team who opened the season against the Florida Gators. Although we lost, our ’Canes fought hard and we are optimistic about the year ahead. They provide a positive example for value of resiliency. Our students may try something new and explore a new passion; it may have outstanding results or it may be a lesson learned. Good decision making is key to ensuring that they recover from stumbles. We are here to support them and you if more assistance is needed.

Dr. Patricia A. Whitely has been the Vice President for Students Affairs since 1997 and is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education and Human Development. Dr. Whitely is responsible for oversight of residential life, leadership development, diversity and inclusion initiatives, service learning, orientation, student organizations, student activities, student facilities, student counseling and student health centers, Greek life, and the Dean of Students Office.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Staying healthy during football season

With the start of a new school year comes the start of a new Miami Hurricane football season! While there are a lot of reasons for your student to get excited, it is important for them to remain healthy and safe during their game-day experience.

Since the games are hosted 25 miles from campus at Hard Rock Stadium, the University provides busing for students to travel to and from the game through the UBus program. Students only need to bring their game ticket and 'Cane Card to ride the bus.

The Student Fan Zone is a student tailgate coordinated by Category 5 and Student Activities and Student Organizations to provide students a fun and safe football experience. Hosted each home game, this event includes free food, water, shade, bathrooms, live music, spirit section, charging stations, and more.

As the countdown to kickoff is on, it is important for everyone to properly hydrate, reapply sunblock often, and always bring your ’Canes spirit!

ACADEMIC CONNECTION

OFFICE OF THE PROVOST

University of Miami Experience course information

At the University of Miami, we continually seek to equip our students with resources that prepare them for success. One such resource is the University of Miami Experience (UMX 100), which is a self-paced, online class that reveals leadership opportunities, campus activities, and helpful services available to new and continuing students. It’s also a chance for students to earn their first “A” at the University of Miami!

UMX 100 is required for all incoming first-year and transfer students, and their final grade in the course appears on their official University of Miami transcript. While the completion deadline is September 30, 2019, UMX remains an active resource for all students while they attend the University of Miami, and accessing this course is as easy as logging in to Blackboard. Please encourage your student to complete this course and frequently revisit it to access valuable information for this semester and for semesters to come.
