OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
UM's new Money Management Program aims to educate students about how to manage their personal finances. Each semester, the Office of Undergraduate Financial Assistance will offer the Money Talks series, which are free and informal sessions on a variety of personal finance topics. Many other areas of the university are also involved and working together to make programming tailored specifically to the needs of varied populations.
Through this formalized initiative, students are being provided with the personal financial education that many parents wish they had received when they were young adults. With a parent's support and encouragement, a student could enhance their knowledge on many of the financial life skills that are critical for their long term success. Thanks for caring and the Office of Undergraduate Financial Assistance looks forward to playing a part in every student becoming their best financial self!

VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS
I am excited to welcome those of you who are able to join us for Family Weekend in just a few short days. We have done much to ensure that our program enables you time to connect with our students while also experiencing your student’s life at UM. This is an exciting time to reconnect with students, fellow 'Cane friends, and to be back in the excitement of our campus. Our football team will face off against Virginia Tech and we hope that whether you are on campus or elsewhere that you join us in cheering on the 'Canes!
Directly following our Family Weekend, our students are brought to mid semester. Our students will get a break in the academic calendar with four days of Fall Break. This is designed to provide students a break in the action and a time to assess their academic progress and plan for the end of the semester. This may be a picture that brings them great joy, seeing them succeed where they are comfortable or succeed where they had not before. For some, this brings additional stress.
One of my priorities in my vice presidency is always to think and plan strategically for both those students who are excelling and those whose resilience must be at an all-time high. I recently revisited the Harvard Business Review article discussing essential skills of strategic leadership. This provide some much needed reminders and lessons concerning how to be a leader at any level as a professional, parent, or student. These lessons can be key for our students as they take the Fall Break to assess their progress and plan for the semester. There are a plethora of campus resources, academic, personal, or otherwise, that students can turn to for guidance and support as they plan. Do not hesitate to reach out if you are ever in need of assistance.
Dr. Patricia A. Whitely has been the Vice President for Student Affairs since 1997 and is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education and Human Development. Dr. Whitely is responsible for oversight of residential life, leadership development, diversity and inclusion initiatives, service learning, orientation, student organizations, student activities, student facilities, student counseling and student health centers, Greek life, and the Dean of Students Office.

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE
Flu season is here and the single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year. Flu shots are available at Student Health Service and will be available at multiple locations on campus throughout the semester. If your student has not already received their flu shot, please encourage them to do so. Students can get their flu shot either by scheduling an online appointment at mystudenthealth.miami.edu (for "Visit Reason" choose "Flu Shot') or by stopping by one of our events around campus. For a full list of flu shot events this semester, go to miami.edu/flushots.

OFFICE OF THE UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR
One of the most important aspects of your student’s college career will be the courses they take and their level of academic engagement. Course registration at the University of Miami is school- and college-specific, so your student should pay close attention to the directions and communications coming from their school or college.
Here is the schedule for Spring 2020 registration:
- Monday, October 21 – Continuing students receive registration appointments
- Monday, November 4 - Registration opens in CaneLink for continuing students. Remember that to be considered a full-time student, your student must enroll in at least 12 credits.
Students starting in Spring 2020 can find specific registration information here. If you have additional questions about the process, contact your student’s school or college directly listed on that website.
