DEPARTMENT OF ORIENTATION & COMMUTER STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

A season of celebrations

The culmination of the spring semester and the overall academic year brings much joy and excitement across campus. Whether your student was an award recipient, inducted into an honors organization, completed another rigorous semester, or is graduating, there is much to reflect upon and celebrate. We encourage you to share time together as a family to celebrate these successes.

As the Hurricane Family Connection takes a short break for the summer, we look forward to reconnecting with our returning students and families in August. We look forward to seeing you soon, whether it be at Commencement, Family Weekend, or simply a visit to campus. For our new ‘Cane students and families, we will be in touch throughout the summer as we prepare to welcome you with our ‘Cane Kickoff orientation program. If you need anything along the way, our department is only a quick email or phone call away.

FROM DR. WHITELY'S DESK

VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Summer reflections

Our students have accomplished much this year. They have tried something new, made mistakes, learned lessons, enhanced themselves, and completed another step on the journey of their professional life. We are so grateful to work with our families to make each of these accomplishments possible.

As I wish students congratulations on a great year and well wishes for summer, I often get asked: “What do you do for the summer?” While the summer may involve fewer students and slower campus traffic, work is still happening. We reflect on initiatives that empowered students to participate and engage, such as What Matters to U presented by Student Government. We enhance opportunities to further student learning, such as 'Cane Kickoff. We plan for more opportunities where it continues to be great to be a Miami Hurricane.

Whether your student is graduating in just a few days, preparing for a summer internship, or anything in between, we are so glad to have you all be a part of the 'Canes community. Congratulations to those of you will be seeing your student become an alumnus! If your student is continuing in the fall, we hope you will join us for Family Weekend.

Summer Wellness Tips for Students

Summer is right around the corner and as your student settles into a new routine, it is important for them to keep their health and wellness at the forefront.  Whether your student is residing locally in Miami and using the Herbert Wellness Center, returning to a local gym, or heading outdoors, these suggestions will keep them active, healthy, and enjoying all that summer has to offer.

  1. Stay active. Encourage your student to join a gym, test new workout plans or facilities, or enjoy local activities like hiking, swimming, biking, running, and more.  Partake in this activity as a family or have them reconnect with friends!  This can help your student with missing their college friends and
  2. Stay hydrated. Although your student may believe if they can handle the tropical heat of Miami they can handle any location, each hour spent in the sun requires replenishing the water in their body.
  3. Use sunscreen. In addition to staying hydrated, sunscreen protects the body and is known to prevent skin cancer and can delay aging of the skin.
  4. Get some Rest. Although remaining active is important, relaxation and sleep after another rigorous year of courses can help replenish your student’s motivation.  Activities such as yoga, meditation, and sleep are all great examples.
