OFFICE OF THE UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR

Tips and tricks for course registration

In early April, continuing students can begin registering for summer and fall 2019 courses. Be sure your student meets with their academic advisor to ensure they are selecting courses that meet their degree requirements and fulfill their cognates. Each school and college has specific procedures for advising processes and registration appointments.

The summer term is a great time to earn extra credits or take care of pre-requisite courses for the upcoming fall. UM offers three summer sessions to allow undergraduates to take as many as 12 credits. This can be especially helpful if your student needs to earn a few more credits to stay on track for graduation or if they are looking to gain additional learning opportunities.

When registering, remind your student to take advantage of the waitlist and swap features in CaneLink. This can help them get into a class that may initially be full without having to constantly check if a seat has opened; it will automatically register them for it.

Karen Beckett serves as the University Registrar and provides overall responsibility for activities relating to course registration, students’ academic records, and course scheduling.

GIVING DAY AT UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

Help support the impact of the Division of Student Affairs

The University of Miami is a community where all ‘Canes belong. It is a place where each member of our Hurricane family feels valued by one another and has the opportunity to add value in many ways. From events like ‘Cane Kickoff and Family Weekend to this monthly newsletter and our Family Resource Guide, we hope that you feel like you are a valued and engaged member of our community.

We invite you to participate in Giving Day 2019 on April 8 to show that you care about your fellow ‘Canes and that you support the positive impact that the Division of Student Affairs makes on the student experience. Specifically, you will have the opportunity to support our Campaign for New Student Housing, the Patricia A. Whitely Emergency Assistance Fund, the innovative and nationally recognized Leadership UMiami program, and a host of our student organizations.

Mark your calendar now so that you don’t forget to visit the UM Giving Day website on April 8 to lend your support.

VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Summer internships and courses

Whether your student is completing their first year or their last semester, the month of April brings banquets, celebrations, and lots of reminiscing - an experience where our students are able to acknowledge the work they put into their college careers.

Successfully conquering stress and personal obstacles of the semester is also a reason to celebrate. When students overcome their challenges, I am reminded of how powerful it is to experience failure and the value of resilience created by supportive college environments.

A recent article in The New York Times discusses problem-solving for our students rather than with them. As a parent myself, I understand the challenge of building resilience in my child. I recognize how hard it is to stay on the sidelines and keep from acting as a bouncer to any problem that comes their way. With your collaboration, we are able to support our students, ensuring that an obstacle remains a mere speedbump rather than a stop sign.

There are still opportunities for our students to get ahead of their schedules, find that summer internship opportunity, and to end their semesters on a high note. We need only encourage them to look a little farther and dig a little deeper for the specific resource that works best for them. If your student is ever in need of support, do not hesitate to reach out.

Dr. Patricia A. Whitely has been the Vice President for Students Affairs since 1997 and is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education and Human Development. Dr. Whitely is responsible for oversight of residential life, leadership development, service learning, orientation, student organizations, student activities, student facilities, student counseling and student health centers, Greek life, and the dean of students office.

'CANES SUCCESS CENTER

Keeping your student motivated every step of the way

The academic year is coming to an end and depending on your student’s year at UM, there are so many things to look forward to in the years ahead. Studies show that parents and families are the best source of guidance and can help students reach their potential during college, both inside and outside the classroom. When the spring term ends, take a moment to help your student look forward to what will excite and motivate them in their next year at UM:

  • First Year – make sure they are taking advantage of resources and getting involved. Now is the perfect time to engage with our Toppel Career Center, too. The best way to ensure future success is to take advantage of ALL that UM has to offer from the start.
  • Sophomore Year – consider a study abroad experience, cultivate a faculty mentor, look for leadership opportunities, anything to keep the excitement and motivation level high.
  • Junior Year – time to dig into your major, explore internship opportunities, and work with your academic advisor to complete a credit check for senior year.
  • Senior Year – enjoy your graduation celebration!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

UNIVERSITY CHAPLAIN'S ASSOCIATION

Finding spiritual life on campus

“Can my student find God and spiritual life at college?”

“Will my student be able to practice their religion on campus?”

These are the questions I get asked most often from families of incoming students. For almost 18 years, you nurtured your student’s spiritual path and guided them in their religious education. Now that they are in college, you hope that what they were taught actually sticks. The good news is there are many opportunities to opt-in to religion and spirituality at University of Miami. The challenge is, like with all things at college, students have to carve out their own path.

Here are some practical ways to get connected:

  1. Meet our Chaplains
  2. Join the Interfaith Council
  3. Take a Religious Studies Course

Families always ask what happens if a student has to miss a class for a holiday. The UM Academic Bulletin outlines this in the Religious Holy Day Policy. I also encourage you to look at social media and websites of our faith-based organizations to take advantage of involvement opportunities within the Religion and Spirituality category.

HOUSING & RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Encourage your student to practice good housekeeping

Florida is on record as the most humid state in the nation, with South Florida's relative humidity being higher than most areas throughout the entire year. As we begin to enter the rainy season, it is especially important to encourage your student to follow good housekeeping practices to remove any accumulated moisture in their on-campus room. Most importantly, proper use of thermostats and allowing wet towels or clothes to air dry are paramount to controlling the potential for mold and mildew.

We’ve put together an informational web page to help students keep their spaces clean and avoid excess moisture. As always, students should submit a Service Request if they suspect that a leak or other maintenance issue is causing moisture to accumulate in their space.
