VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS
As I start my 22nd year as the Vice President for Student Affairs at UM, I am reminded of so many successful students and some of the real challenges they have faced along the way.
By far, students who are able to be resilient and bounce back in the face of change or hardship, rather than give up, continue to be those most successful in their college career and beyond. As an educator and parent myself, I appreciated this article about supporting your student in building resilience.
As the article suggests, watching your student struggle, or even fail, is incredibly challenging, but there are ways that you can support without stepping in. There is a multitude of services and programs that can help your UM student to be successful in and out of the classroom. Please encourage your student to reach out.
Together, we can work to support our students in meeting challenges, overcoming obstacles, and finding their own success. At the U, 'Canes Care for 'Canes!
Dr. Patricia A. Whitely has been the Vice President for Students Affairs since 1997 and is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education and Human Development. OFFICE OF ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT
The start of a new academic year is a time of transition for all students. The Office of Academic Enhancement’s Director of the Programs of Academic Excellence, Christopher Doell, who also serves as Senior Advisor in the Residential Colleges, recommends that families discuss with their student the importance of connecting early to the resources available on campus.
From faculty members and advisors in the Schools and Colleges to the many offices that provide direct support, there is no shortage of dedicated people who are sincerely interested in seeing students thrive. Encourage your students to check out the Camner Center, Learning Commons, Toppel Career Center, and the Counseling Center, to name just a few!
