UPDATE: IBIS Ally Mentorship Program

The University of Miami has a large network of allies, as well as LGBTQ+ faculty, staff, and administrators who are out and proud at work. Through the IBIS Ally Mentorship Program, undergraduate and graduate students are paired with a staff or faculty mentor who offers support, guidance, and friendship. For information, email lgbtq@miami.edu.

Become a Mentor

If you would like to become an IBIS Ally Mentor for a student at the University of Miami, please fill out the Mentor Application Form on OrgSync.

Eligibility for mentor position includes:

  • Completing an IBIS Ally Network Training session
  • Faculty, staff, or administrator from any campus for the University of Miami
  • LGBTQ+ identified individuals or a self-identified allies of the LGBTQ+ Community

California Becomes First State to Condemn Intersex Surgeries for Children

California’s Legislature has passed a resolution in favor of eliminating non consensual “corrective” surgeries on the genitals of intersex children.

The surgeries are often medically unnecessary, and are framed as “social emergencies” when they’re physically and emotionally damaging instead, nonprofit organization interACT Advocates for Intersex Youth said. The petition called the practice a human rights violation, reported USA Today. 

Intersex patients are also often lied to about the cause of their surgeries.  Executive Director of interACT Advocates for Intersex Youth Kimberly Zieselman was told that she needed an operation to remove cancer at 15, but found out over two decades later when looking at her medical records that it actually was to remove internal testes.

Come learn about the legal name change process and what happens after a court grants the name change. Trainers will include attorneys from Legal Services of Greater Miami, and staff members from TransSOCIAL. After the training session, students will be able to provide assistance to community members interested in filing prose name changes.

HPAC (Health Promotion And Care) is a research center at the University of Miami dedicated to the development and study of interventions related to behavioral aspects of physical health. Submission Guidelines

University faculty, staff, administration, student groups and organizations must submit information to Pride Press at least one (1) week prior to issue release. Submissions must be made on the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Friday of every month by 11:59 p.m. Issue will be released the first (1st) and third (3rd) Friday of every month.

Information for University-sponsored events, athletic events, campus events, programs, seminars, fundraisers, etc. are accepted. We ask that you keep submissions short (between 50-100 words). It is suggested that you include a hyperlink where people can find more information. Be sure to include the basics (who is holding the event, what the event is, when the event takes place, where it is happening, at what cost, and who to contact).

Submissions by student groups, faculty and staff are accepted. Those pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community take precedence.

Submissions are accepted via email to lgbtq@miami.edu

Digital flyers or other promotional images and materials will be accepted, in addition to your informational blurb.
