A New Chapter in Research Leadership
Dr. Ruby Natale, Pediatric Psychologist and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, will succeed Dr. Alan Delamater as Director of Research at the Mailman Center. In her role as Director of Research, Dr. Natale’s vision is to strengthen the Mailman Center’s research enterprise by fostering cross-departmental and interdisciplinary collaboration across the University, supporting faculty and trainee research development, and expanding competitive external funding.
She will establish a Mailman Research Council to engage faculty in identifying strategic research priorities and lead efforts to build the infrastructure, mentorship, and partnerships needed to move innovative ideas from concept to funded research and, ultimately, into practice. Her long-term goals include expanding large-scale collaborative research initiatives and developing the infrastructure needed to establish a Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Research, further positioning the Mailman Center as a national leader in research that improves outcomes for children with developmental disabilities and their families.

University of Miami's Early Intervention Autism Pilot Project
The University of Miami's Early Intervention Autism Pilot Project, funded by the Florida Department of Health, is underway and building momentum on two key fronts. The team is developing a cross-disciplinary provider database for Miami-Dade County that spans the full range of autism interventions, from intensive one on one therapies to group based and family centered approaches, capturing the breadth and depth of care options available to families. In parallel, the team is defining a study cohort to examine the costs, outcomes, and feasibility of value-based autism care, with research approvals now in progress. Ongoing engagement with community partners and families continues to shape this evolving work.

With support from the Miami Dolphins Foundation, Dr. Solano discussed the medical management of concussion, while Dr. Coto addressed coping with concussion and the cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and school-based needs of students recovering from pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). Together, their presentations emphasized the importance of coordinated medical, emotional, and school-based support to help students and student-athletes successfully return to learning and activity.
