American Academy of Pediatrics
Akhshaya Mahalingam, Pediatric Resident, was awarded an American Academy of Pediatrics Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Resident Grant for her project, “Cooking Up Healthier Futures.” Her mentor for the project is Dr. Sarah Sukkar. The project aims to promote nutrition education and obesity prevention among school-aged children in underserved Miami-Dade County communities through hands-on, culturally responsive cooking sessions.
Through partnerships with the University of Miami School Health Initiative, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and EatWell Exchange, the program will provide school-based culinary education focused on practical cooking skills, nutrition knowledge, vegetable intake, and willingness to try healthy foods. Programming will be led with support from registered dietitians and will include caregiver-facing materials to reinforce healthy, affordable, culturally relevant food choices at home. The long-term goal is to create a sustainable, school-based prevention model that supports lifelong healthy eating behaviors and reduces future obesity and cardiometabolic risk.
