2026 Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) Conference
Mailman Center faculty and staff were active contributors at the 2026 Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) Conference, joining national colleagues to share and learn about AT. Dr. Austin Garilli, Dr. Michelle Schladant, Cristina Pujol, Tina Givner, and Ana Nevares represented the Center’s work in effective augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) practices for educators and parents.
Schladant, Givner, and Pujol delivered a session titled “Family Functioning Patterns in Children Who Use AAC,” examining how family experiences shape AAC use and outcomes." Garilli and Schladant also presented a research poster, “AAC in the Preschool Classroom: Scalable Coaching to Build Team Capacity,” highlighting practical coaching approaches that strengthen educators’ ability to support communication in inclusive classrooms.
The conference offered valuable opportunities to share Step Up AT resources, connect with partners, and bring back new ideas to support children, families, and educators.

Grand Rounds Replay - Speaker: Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, MD
Advances in characterizing the earliest features of autism have been informed by prospective studies of infants at increased likelihood, including younger siblings. This presentation summarized the earliest behavioral features as well as predictive measures of brain structure/function, which have the potential to move detection of autism to even earlier in life. It is also important to acknowledge that despite these advances, the average age of autism diagnosis has barely changed. Evidence-based strategies to expand diagnostic capacity and access, while maintaining the integrity of the assessment process, was discussed.

Jada Garnett - Former LEND Trainee
"...the LEND service project allowed me to bring my ideas to life and collaborate with medical school students, exchange research, and come up with a promising proposal which has in turn amplified my skills in an interdisciplinary setting. Lastly, coordinating with the Mailman staff week after week was pivotal to my experience within my practicum. Everyone I interacted with down to the members in my LEND service project believed in me and believed in my ideas- to have that mentorship and collaboration was truly impactful."
