Dear UM Community,

The University of Miami embraces the rich diversity of our community and promotes a climate of respect for the dignity of every person. We know that the vast majority of the members of our community adheres to these core principles. Sadly, we sometimes encounter acts of discrimination, intolerance, and hatred, which do not represent who we are and must be met with a firm response.

In the past week there have been two disturbing anti-Semitic incidents at our residential colleges. In both instances, first on April 10 at Eaton Residential College and again on April 14 at Stanford Residential College, a swastika was drawn on a white board outside the dorm room of a female student. The first of these acts coincided with the day of remembrance of the Holocaust. In the second instance, disrespectful sexual comments were also included.

The University of Miami Police Department, the Dean of Students Office, and Housing and Residential Life are investigating the incidents and will report back directly to me. The individual or individuals responsible will be held accountable. Anyone with information on either incident is encouraged to contact UMPD or a housing staff member immediately.

Support and counseling have been provided to the students impacted by these acts of hatred. Leaders with Student Government, UM Hillel, and UM Chabad have condemned these incidents.

At the University of Miami we are a united community. We are saddened and concerned by the incidents, but they motivate us to reaffirm our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone. We also reaffirm our aspiration to be an exemplary institution, which serves as a model of diversity, inclusion, and respect. Let us respond with one voice rejecting hatred and strengthening our resolve to create a sustained culture of belonging.

Sincerely,
