First Leonard M. Miller Professors Don Their White Coats

In February John G. Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, and the family of the late Leonard M. Miller, a longtime South Florida businessman and philanthropist, honored the inaugural group of Leonard M. Miller Professors.

“We are most grateful to the Millers, who wanted to recognize some of the physicians who meant so much to their family,” says Clarkson.

In 2004 the Miller family gave the School of Medicine $100 million, part of which has been used to establish the Miller professorships. The six distinguished faculty members—Pasquale Benedetto, M.D, Frank Eismont, M.D., Laurence Gardner, M.D., Barth Green, M.D., Joe Levi, M.D., and Eugene Schiff, M.D.—are emblematic of Leonard Miller’s vision of academic excellence and serve as a reminder of the importance of work in academic medicine. Each of the professors is an exemplary physician who makes a significant contribution to the Miller School and to the community.

The professors received an official white coat with their name and additional title of Leonard M. Miller Professor.

“There is something very important that each of you have brought to the table: decency, care, and a level of involvement with your patients,” Stuart Miller, Leonard’s son, said at the luncheon honoring the physicians. “There is a mission here to grow and enhance a first-class institution. In you we see a reflection of that medical school we are enthusiastic about supporting.”
