Jesus Gomez, DDS, assistant professor of oral maxillofacial surgery, led the team that performed the first of a series of surgeries at Jackson Memorial Hospital to remove the growth and reconstruct Marlie Casseus’s face. She was dangerously deformed due to McCune-Albright syndrome, a genetic condition marked by uneven growth, pain, and brittleness of the affected bones. The growth had engulfed Casseus’s nose and mouth, rendering her unable to eat, breathe, or speak on her own. There was concern that the growth was threatening her sight. At press time, the upper portion of the mass had been successfully excised and Marlie was doing well. She’s expected to undergo at least two more surgeries. | ![]() |
