MEDITATION CLASS

AIG VALIC PRESENTS "RETIREMENT STRATEGIES FOR LIFE"
AIG VALIC will present the financial educational seminar, “Retirement Strategies for Life,” today from noon to 1 p.m. at the Professional Development & Training Office, 155 Dominion Parking Garage. The seminar will cover retirement transitions, social security and Medicare, income and distribution planning, tax planning during retirement, investment strategies and estate planning. FOURTH ANNUAL HUBERT L. ROSOMOFF RESEARCH DAY
The Department of Neurological Surgery will present the Fourth Hubert L. Rosomoff Research Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh floor Apex Center. Research by faculty, residents, and fellows will be showcased along with lectures by visiting professor Mitchel Berger, M.D., chairman of neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco. DEAN’S PATIENT SAFETY COLLOQUIUM WORKSHOP
René Amalberti, M.D., Ph.D., will discuss “Normal Human Errors in Complex Systems” at the Dean’s Patient Safety Colloquium Workshop this afternoon. Dr. Amalberti, with degrees in both medicine and cognitive psychology, is an international leader in patient safety, blood transfusion and safety and risk assessment. His research focuses on risk control, safety, and the design of intelligent assistances for complex and risky industrial systems. Dr. Amalberti will be speaking from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Diagnostic Treatment Center 270 at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Lunch will be provided. For more information, please call Shirley D. 40TH ANNUAL RESIDENTS' DAYS
Bascom Palmer will be hosting its 40th Annual Residents’ Days on Friday and Saturday at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. The registration fee is $190 for alumni members; $275 for non-alumni members. CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
Carlos Sandoval, M.D., director of the Courtelis Center for Psychosocial Oncology, will be discussing “Dealing with Depression, Anxiety, and Other Psychological Problems” as part of the Conversations about Cancer series on Thursday at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach from noon to 1 p.m. The Deerfield Beach facility is located at 1192 East Newport Center Drive, Suite 100. INTENSIVE GERIATRIC TRAINING: SOCIAL WORK MODULE
The Miami VA Medical Center's Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC), the Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC), and Barry University's School of Social Work will be hosting the Intensive Geriatric Training: Social Work Module this Saturday as well as on June 26 at Barry University in Miami Shores. The program offers social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors 10 different 4-hour modules in understanding and meeting the needs of the older adult population. Registration is $10 per session for UM/JMH/VA employees and participants may choose from the different module sessions. COMING SOON: TRAVEL WEB SITE FOR FACULTY AND STAFF
Launching July 6, e-Cane's Travel, a self-booking travel reservation tool, will provide the most cost-effective way for you to plan your business travel. e-Cane's Travel reduces surf time by retrieving travel information and fares from dozens of sources, such as Orbitz, Expedia, and AA.com, and displays them in a single screen. This new service facilitates direct billing to the UM Ghost Card, and includes 24-hour customer service travel agency support. BESMOKEFREE PROGRAM STARTS UP AGAIN IN JULY
Another round of the UM BeSmokeFree program will begin next month. BeSmokeFree offers faculty, staff and dependents, as well as students and non-university affiliates, a number of different techniques designed to help kick the cigarette habit. These options complement the program’s basic support group/classroom sessions, which will include seven group sessions during a six-week program. Each session will be led by a variety of health experts, such as a health educator, respiratory therapist, exercise physiologist, mental health therapist, and nutritionist. Participants in BeSmokeFree who also are enrolled in the University’s health care plan will receive full reimbursement of program fees upon completion of the program. The cost is $84 for each participant, and all UM health care plan members will receive a $12 voucher for each classroom session they attend. INTENSIVE GERIATRIC TRAINING CONFERENCE
The UM Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) and the Miami VA Medical Center's Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) will be hosting the Intensive Geriatric Training Conference on June 23-25 at the Westin Fort Lauderdale hotel. The goal of this three-day conference is to provide licensed healthcare professionals with training in the delivery of efficient interdisciplinary team care in order to meet the health care needs of older adults. Continuing education credits will be available for selected medical disciplines. This event has been approved for tuition remission for a limited number of full-time University of Miami employees (partial registration is also available). MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS AND WORKSHOP
Ronald Clark, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education Grand Rounds on Friday, June 25, at noon in the fifth floor of the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building. Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. Clark’s presentation is “Proposal to Modify the Lecture System as a Learning Environment.” Dr. Clark currently works with David Gordon, M.D., in the Center for Research in Medical Education where, in conjunction with three neurologists from other institutions and a team of educational research specialists, they are producing interactive programs and journal articles for medical students and physicians. He will be presenting a vision of the future learning environment, inviting views for maintaining or modifying the current lecture system, and discussing computer software applications most applicable to the learning environment. HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for June will feature Daniel Armstrong, Ph.D., professor and associate chair of pediatrics and director of the Mailman Center, speaking on “Children’s Participation in Clinical Research.” The seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 29 at the Mailman Center, room 3023, from noon to 1 p.m.  Advance registration is required as room capacity is limited.  Please e-mail MAbraham@med.miami.edu to reserve your space. 

SURVIVAL SKILLS FOR SCIENTISTS
The Office of Graduate Studies and the Postdoctoral Programs Office will host a Professional Skills and Ethics Workshop, otherwise known as “Survival Skills for Scientists,” on July 19 and 20 at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The one-credit, two-day workshop for senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will explore how to take charge of your career, 10 Habits of Highly Effective Scholars, the specifics of writing a scientific paper, ethical case studies, and more. It will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Science and Administration Building on the Rosenstiel campus. Lunch will be provided. Seating is limited.
