PROPOSALS NOW ACCEPTED FOR AWARD TO
SUPPORT PATIENT-ORIENTED CANCER RESEARCH
The Executive Office of Research Leadership calls for proposals for the Damon
Runyon -Lilly Clinical Investigator Award, which supports young physician-scientists
conducting patient-oriented cancer research. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen
or permanent legal resident, and only two nominations per institution will
be accepted. The award will be granted for a period of five years and is subject
to review and approval each year. Submit a one-page summary of your research
along with your CV to the Executive Office of Research Leadership by February

ADMINISTRATION TO APPLY FOR ACS GRANT
The UM/Sylvester Office of Research Administration is now accepting applications
for the American Cancer Society (ACS) Institutional Grant to provide funds
for meritorious cancer research that cannot be readily supported through other
funding mechanisms. The primary purpose of the ACS grant is to provide seed
funds for the initiation of promising new projects or novel ideas by junior
faculty members. An award of $20,000 is available for a one-year period. Applicants
must not have received any peer reviewed funding. For guidelines and application

MAGEC PRESENTS INTENSIVE GERIATRIC
TRAINING NUTRITION MODULE
The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) will be hosting the Intensive
Geriatric Training Nutrition Module on February 6, 13, and 20 at the Miami
Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged at Douglas Gardens. The objectives of
this three-day course are to increase the understanding of the physiological,
biomedical, psychological, economic, and social factors that may contribute
to changes in the nutritional status and health of the elderly. This program
has been approved for 20 contact hours for registered dietitians and registered
dietetic technicians. Pre-registration is $155, with a reduced rate of $100
for UM, VA, and Jackson employees and students. The registration fee includes

CDC EXPERT PRESENTS DISCUSSION
OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND GENOMICS
Muin Khoury, M.D., Ph.D., of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
visits the medical campus to discuss the ethical, legal, and social issues
brought about by the intersection of public health and genomics. The lecture
is presented by UM Bioethics Programs as part of the Dialogues in Research
Ethics series and will be held February 7, noon, in the Rosenstiel Building,
