PRIVACY OFFICE ESTABLISHED TO HELP PATIENTS
EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS UNDER NEW RULE

We made it! The Privacy Rule went into effect yesterday and the University of Miami was ready. What does this mean for you? Remember your training. ... The privacy rule establishes new safeguards to protect patient information such as the minimum necessary standard and business associate agreements. Certain uses of patient information now require specific authorization, such as fundraising, marketing, and research. The rule also provides patients with new rights related to their health information such as the right to receive a Notice of Privacy Practices. UM began to provide a notice to all patients on April 7th. A centralized Privacy Office has been created to promote a privacy culture, facilitate patient rights requests, monitor compliance with privacy and security policies and procedures, and investigate and respond to privacy complaints. The Privacy Office can be contacted at (305) 243-5000, or from outside of Miami-Dade County at (866) 366-HUSH. Fax: (305) 243-7487. E-mail: privacy@med.miami.edu. FACULTY LEARNING COMMUNITIES HIGHLIGHT
COLLABORATION AMONG COLLEAGUES

Join your colleagues to enhance educational skills and knowledge at faculty learning communities, coordinated by the Educational Development Office. Whether you are seeking development in instructional skills or looking to brainstorm about a particular discipline, these groups of five to eight faculty members offer a forum for sharing ideas, strategies, and future goals. Members of “cohort-based communities” will gain knowledge in teaching skills and instructional career development, while “topic-based communities” will address specific themes including teaching methods like problem-based learning, teaching a particular discipline, or developing a medical education portfolio. Applications for suggested faculty-learning communities are available online at the Educational Development Office Web site, http://www.mededu.miami.edu/EDO. Interested faculty members also may suggest a new learning community. For more information, visit the Web site or e-mail Richard Tiberius, director of the Educational Development Office, at rtiberius@med.miami.edu.
