DR. PAT CARALIS HONORED WITH DISTINGUISHED AWARD

Pat Caralis, M.D., professor in the Department of Medicine and chief of the General Medicine Section at the Miami VA, received the Laureate Award at the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) Florida Chapter's Scientific Meeting, September 23. The award honors members who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in patient care, education, or research and serve both their community and the ACP. Dr. Caralis has received many awards at the School of Medicine in recognition of her dedication to teaching and service, including the Peer Award of the Teaching Faculty in 1997 and an appointment to the UM Medical Women's Association's Hall of Fame.

ROBERT GAILEY OF PHYSICAL THERAPY IS SUBJECT OF HERALD FEATURE STORY

The Miami Herald recently profiled Robert Gailey, assistant professor in the Division of Physical Therapy, who is internationally renowned for his work with amputees. Gailey focuses on improving the gait of patients with prostheses, and some of his patients have gone on to compete in the Paralympic Games, including gold medalist Carolina Bulow, who won the 4x100 swimming freestyle relay at the 1992 games in Barcelona. DR. JOAN WEISS MAYER NAMED 1999-2000 TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Joan Weiss Mayer, M.D., professor in the Department of Medicine, received the Teacher of the Year Award for the academic year 1999-2000. The award was presented at the School of Medicine's commencement ceremony in May. Dr. Mayer was recognized for her positive contributions to the education of medical students, who know her best as their guide through the "Harvey" course during fourth year studies. Dr. Mayer also educates nurses and community physicians, and has received many awards honoring her teaching abilities.

BENEFITS WEB SITE MAKES IT "EASY" TO UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION

As the Benefits Administration Open Enrollment Fair approaches, it is important for all employees to update contact information that has changed over the past year. Employees may refresh addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses on the University's EASY system. To use EASY, you must have a PIN number, which can be obtained in person at the Human Resources and Faculty Affairs offices or on-line at http://www.benefits.miami.edu. To update your contact information, visit http://easy.miami.edu, and click the green button labelled "Personal Biographical Info." Open Enrollment will be held from October 16 through November 17, with a Benefits Fair at the Jackson Cafeteria on November 2 and 3.

SYLVESTER'S BREAST CANCER AWARENESS FAIR FEATURES EDUCATIONAL DISPLAYS

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many events are scheduled at the School of Medicine to educate and inform faculty, staff, and patients about the disease. UM/Sylvester will present the Breast Cancer Awareness Fair on October 3, Sylvester Conference Room 1301, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature displays from the American Cancer Society, Cancer Information Service, Beauty Wise Cosmetic & Skin Care, and the Courtelis Center, among others.

LEARN COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS AT EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE SEMINAR

The Employee Assistance Program will conduct the seminar "Conflict Communication Skills," October 3, 1 to 3 p.m., in the Office of Professional Development and Training, Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. The course will teach you to listen reflectively, focus on the problem at hand, and involve others in creating a solution. To register, call 305-243-3090.

ETHICS PROGRAM OFFERS SEMINAR ON CORE ISSUES

School of Medicine faculty will present various lectures on trends in medical ethics at "Extreme Ethics: Unusually Difficult Challenges in Epidemiology and Human Subjects Research," a three-day seminar, October 12 - 14. The course will be held at the James L. Knight International Center, downtown Miami, and topics will include the ethics of genetics, computing, public health research, and scientist advocacy, among others.
