DR. DOROTHY HICKS RECOGNIZED
FOR WORK WITH RAPE VICTIMS
Dorothy Hicks, M.D,
professor emeritus at the School of Medicine, was recently recognized
with an In the Company of Women Award from the Miami-Dade Parks and
Recreation Department. The award is given to women who have been pioneers
in their fields. Dr. Hicks has devoted her professional life to helping
rape victims piece together their lives from a position of strength
rather than weakness. "A woman has a choice: learning how to deal with
it or letting it destroy her," said Dr. Hicks, who helped found UM/Jackson's
Rape Treatment Center in 1974, one of the nations first such centers.
Dr. Hicks taught at UM from 1967 to 2000 and said she enjoyed shaping
her students' attitudes and broadening their experiences. To read the
Sun-Sentinel article on her career and award, visit http://archives.sun-sentinel.com/cgi-bin/get_fldoc.pl?DBLIST=fl01&DOCNUM=29138.

the education of medical school students. He has taught both medical
and undergraduate students since joining the University in 1962.
DIRECTOR OF ADULT HIV SERVICES
EXPLAINS THE GROWTH OF AIDS IN THE GAY COMMUNITY
Michael Kolber,
M.D., Ph.D., associate professor and director of Adult HIV Services,
discusses reasons for the increased infection rate of HIV/AIDS in the
black, gay male population in a recent Miami Herald article, "AIDS Epidemic
Surges; Gays, Blacks Hit Hardest." The story focuses on the lack of
education about AIDS prevention in lower socioeconomic groups. More
than half of new U.S. HIV infections occur among blacks, who make up
about 12 percent of the population. To read the full article, visit
