DR. JOSEPH ROSENBLATT JOINS
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AS NEW SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR OF UM/SYLVESTER
The Sylvester Comprehensive
Cancer Center has named Joseph D. Rosenblatt, M.D., as its new scientific
director. Dr. Rosenblatt also will serve as the William J. Harrington,
M.D., Chair in Hematology and chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology.
Joining the School of Medicine from his most recent post as chief of
hematology/oncology at the University of Rochester, Dr. Rosenblatt will
lead UM/Sylvester in efforts to recruit new faculty members, centralize
existing programs, and increase the scope of clinical trials. A widely
recognized leader in research on human T-cell leukemia viruses and cancer
gene therapy, Dr. Rosenblatt has received honors including a Leukemia
Society of America Fellowship and a Physician Scientist Award from the
National Institutes of Health, among other distinguished awards.
NOVEL IDEAS CAN EARN INVESTIGATORS
$60,000 FROM TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
The Office of Technology
Transfer is awarding $60,000 through the GAP Fund Program to help support
early stage research and novel ideas that can be patented. All University
of Miami employees, researchers, faculty, students, and staff are encouraged
to submit an invention disclosure describing their idea or invention.
Anyone who submits an invention disclosure before September 30 is eligible
to apply. A total of three awards will be presented: one at the School
of Medicine, one at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric
Science, and one at the University's Coral Gables campus. The deadline
for submission is September 30. Projects selected will be announced
on November 30. Those interested can obtain application forms through

FOR THE 2001 AMERICAN HEART WALK

will return a favor of sorts, hosting the event as a proud recipient

SMOKING CESSATION WEB SITE
PROVIDES HELPFUL INFORMATION AND RELATED LINKS
Are you ready to
make the commitment and quit smoking once and for all? The Smoking Cessation
Continuous Improvement Team has launched a new web site that features
information on the health risks of cigarette smoke, how to stop smoking,
and details on the assistance currently available for smokers who are
ready to drop the habit. There also are links to related sites. Visit

to view all the new features. Also, keep an eye out for interoffice
mail and look for an upcoming survey that will be sent to a random sample
of employees. The Smoking Cessation Team wants your input to help guide

YOUTH AT OB/GYN'S MENOPAUSE SUPPORT SERIES
Register now for
the Menopause Support Series, presented by the Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology. The series is a two-day interactive seminar that will
provide information on physical and emotional aspects of menopause,
along with education on the various therapeutic options available. The
course is geared toward middle-aged women who are beginning to deal
with the stresses of menopause. R. Wayne Whitted, M.D., assistant professor,
and Paul Pietro, M.D., assistant professor, along with Vicki Colburn,
R.N., all of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will conduct
the program on September 12 and 13, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, at Jackson's

ETHICS PROGRAMS KICK OFF
TENTH ANNIVERSARY WITH DISCUSSION OF SCIENTIFIC REGULATIONS
The University of
Miami's Ethics Programs are set to mark their tenth anniversary with
a special series of activities. Beginning with the popular "Dialogues
in Research Ethics" lecture series, the university-wide ethics initiative
will emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of its educational efforts
and scholarship. This year's "Dialogues" series will focus on local
and state issues and presenters, and begins with "What Is it about All
these New Regs?" led by Norman Altman, V.M.D., vice provost for research.
The lecture will discuss scientific review, monitoring, and accountability.
It will be held September 14, noon, in the Rosenstiel Building, Room
6018, and lunch will be provided. Other special events to look for throughout
the academic year are the annual NIH-supported "Extreme Ethics" conference,
October 18 - 20; the tenth annual "Clinical Ethics: Debates, Decisions,
Solutions" conference, March 1, 2002, which will feature a keynote presentation
by UM President Donna E. Shalala; as well as other special initiatives

Studies Koubek Center presents two programs of courses designed to train
participants in healthcare business practices and investments. "Business
in Healthcare" is a six-course program; "Investments" consists of five
courses. Students in each program will receive certificates upon completion,
and it is possible to enroll in both programs. Each course within the
two programs costs $375, but University of Miami employees are eligible
for tuition remission if the subject matter relates directly to the
