LOIS POPE LIFE RESEARCH AWARD
PRESENTED TO NOBEL LAUREATE

Nobel Prize winner Paul Greengard, Ph.D., will visit the School of Medicine on Tuesday, March 4, to accept the Lois Pope LIFE International Research Award, which honors breakthrough advances in neuroscience. Greengard earned the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his contributions in identifying the roles played by dopamine and other neurotransmitters in nerve cell communication. His investigation of communication between nerve cells has set the stage for future therapies to treat disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, and others. Greengard will discuss his research at a presentation entitled “Dopaminergic Signaling and Its Clinical Relevance,” today, March 4, 4 p.m., in the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh floor auditorium. All are invited to attend the lecture.

EXPERT PANEL TO ADDRESS CHALLENGES AND
SOLUTIONS DURING COVER THE UNINSURED WEEK

Living without health insurance is a serious risk faced by 41 million Americans and presents unique challenges to health care workers. Taking steps to address these important issues, the University of Miami has partnered with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in recognizing Cover the Uninsured Week on the School of Medicine campus. An expert panel will discuss the plight of the uninsured and analyze ways to expand health coverage on March 11, 10:30 a.m., in the Lois Pope LIFE Center James A. Batten Apex Center, seventh floor auditorium. Panelists will include Donna E. Shalala, UM President; John G. Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine; Chet Evans, D.P.M., associate VP of graduate studies and dean of podiatric medicine at Barry University; Ronald Berkman, Ph.D., dean of the College of Health and Urban Affairs at Florida International University; and Kathie Sigler, Ed.D., president of Miami-Dade Community College Medical Center Campus. CALDER LIBRARY INTRODUCES NEW SOFTWARE
FOR REMOTE ACCESS TO E-RESOURCES

With the recent installment of EZ Proxy software, UM/Jackson faculty, staff, and students are provided enhanced access to more than 2,200 biomedical e-journals and databases from computers that are not in the UM/Jackson I.P. domain. EZ Proxy software can be used without reconfiguring your browser and, in addition to continued access to resources by publisher or aggregator, EZ Proxy permits access by individual journal title. The Calder Library’s Circulation Desk can provide you with a username and password for accessing the new software. Visit the Calder Library’s Web site at http://calder.med.miami.edu, click on “Remote Access” in the “Quick Links section,” and enter your username and password. SUPPORT EDUCATION AT ANNUAL
CANTERBURY PRESCHOOL WALK-A-THON

Join the UM/Canterbury Preschool at its most important fund-raising event of the year, the 5th Annual Walk/Stroll-A-Thon on the Schoninger Research Quadrangle, March 14, at 11 a.m. The children will earn stickers as they complete laps around the quadrangle. Their goal is to raise $5,000 per campus to enrich their educational programs. Purchase a ticket for the “Take a Friend to Lunch” event following the walk, featuring arroz con pollo, beans, plantains, Caesar salad, soft drinks, and Ghirardelli brownies. Tickets for the lunch are $6 per person and may be purchased by contacting Chris Rabi at 305-243-3777.

Join Team UM for fitness and fun at the 19th Annual Corporate Walk or Run. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this fun event on May 8, 5:30 p.m., at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. This is a wonderful teambuilding opportunity. The department with the most participants (family and friends are welcome) will win a pizza party, compliments of Pizza Hut. ADDRESSES MOLECULAR REGENERATION

The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis continues the Gail F. Beach Memorial 2002-2003 Visiting Lectureship Series with "Plasticity and Reprogramming of Differentiated Cells in Urodele Amphibian Regeneration" presented by Jeremy P. Brockes, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at University College London, on March 5, noon, in the James A. Batten Apex Center, Lois Pope LIFE Center seventh floor auditorium. Brockes’ research on the molecular events of regeneration in adult newt limbs offers new insights into the mechanisms involved in local reversals of differentiated cells. This work has the potential to provide a framework for addressing the regenerative abilities of cells in adult mammals. ANNUAL CONFERENCE PRESENTS OVERVIEW
OF ETHICAL ISSUES AND TIMELY TOPICS

The University of Miami Ethics Programs and the Florida Bioethics Network present the 11th annual “Clinical Ethics: Debates, Decisions, Solutions” conference on March 7 at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Airport. The program features presentations on ethics and aging, ethics committees, “moral slogans,” virtue ethics, end-of-life care, cloning, genetic testing of minors, bioterrorism, and much more. CEUs have been approved for nurses, physicians, psychologists, social workers, and guardians. There is no charge for full-time staff at UM. UM/SYLVESTER MARKS COLORECTAL CANCER
AWARENESS MONTH WITH LECTURE SERIES

In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the UM/Sylvester Education Department and Colorectal Site Disease Group present a two-part lecture series. “Screening And Detection of Colorectal Cancer,” presented by Michael D. Hellinger, M.D., chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery, will be held March 11, noon, in Sylvester Conference Room1301. Seating is limited, and RSVP is required before 1p.m. on March 10. The second lecture in the series, entitled “The Treatment of Colorectal Cancer,” presented by Floriano Marchetti, M.D., assistant professor of surgery, and Mayra Lima, ARNP, will be held March 18, same time and location. SCRIPPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE FACULTY
MEMBER PRESENTS LECTURE ON VISION LOSS

Martin Friedlander, M.D., Ph.D., chief of retina service at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego, will visit the medical campus to present “Stemming Vision Loss: Mechanisms of Ocular Angiogenesis and the Therapeutic Potential of Bone Marrow-Derived Hematopoietic Stem Cells.” The lecture will be held March 13, 5:30 p.m., in the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Retter Auditorium.
 
CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN MEDICAL EDUCATION
PRESENTS TEACHING CONFERENCE ON HEART & STROKE

Register now for the 35th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology and Neurology, March 14 - 16, at the Hyatt Regency Miami. A reduced fee of $100 is available for UM physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses, and CME credit and nurses contact hours are awarded. Presented by the Center for Research in Medical Education (CRME), in cooperation with the American Heart Association’s Council on Clinical Cardiology and Stroke Council, this primary care update focuses on needs inherent to managed care, especially in relation to bedside skills training.
