JOIN THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AT
FACULTY/STAFF PICNIC THIS WEDNESDAY
Faculty and staff are the guests of honor as the School of Medicine
recognizes employee contributions at a special gathering this Wednesday,
November 20. Much of the medical school’s success in its first
50 years has been made possible by faculty members, administrators and
staff. Join the festivities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Schoninger
Research Quadrangle. Learn more about the School of Medicine’s

STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH
LIBRARY EXHIBIT ON SCHOOL’S HISTORY
The Calder Memorial Library and the Division of Biomedical Communications
present the first installment of an exhibit chronicling the School of
Medicine’s first five decades. The school’s history during
the 1950s is now on display in the Library's first floor atrium. All
are welcome to come and relive the school’s exciting history.
GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE AT MEDICAL
SCHOOL BLOOD DRIVE THIS WEEK
Give blood and give life at the School of Medicine blood drive, to be
held November 20 and 21. Stations will be set up at the Rosenstiel Building
second floor student lounge on both days, and additionally at the UM/Sylvester
courtyard on November 20 only. Remember that you can count on safety
when you donate. According to Gordon Dickinson, M.D., chief of the Division
of Infectious Diseases, although publicity about West Nile Virus transmission
by blood transfusion has raised questions, there is zero risk for acquiring
West Nile Virus, HIV, or any other pathogen linked to blood transfusions
through the act of donating blood.

The Medical Bookstore says “Thanks” to School of Medicine
faculty and staff this week with an additional 10 percent discount on

Note that online purchases delivered direct to your home are not eligible

REVISED WEBSITE OFFERS DETAILS AND
INFORMATION ON M.D./PH.D. PROGRAM
The M.D./Ph.D. program has updated its Web site to provide detailed
application information, a schedule of program events, and links relevant
to medical and biomedical research training. Visit http://chroma.med.miami.edu/mdphd
to view the revised M.D./Ph.D. Program Web site. Comments or suggestions

EMPLOYEE DAY BASKETBALL TICKETS
ON SALE THIS WEEK AT MEDICAL CAMPUS
Faculty and staff are the special guests on Employee Day at the Miami
Arena on November 26 when the UM men’s basketball team takes on
Texas A & M University. Each UM employee can receive one complimentary
ticket and purchase up to five more for $1 each. Representatives from
the Athletic Department will be on campus to sell tickets on November

DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE PRESENTS
HEALTH FAIR TO RAISE AWARENESS
In recognition of November as Diabetes Month, the Diabetes Research
Institute is raising awareness with a free community health fair. The
event will be held November 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Diabetes Research
Institute, and will feature educational lectures, free blood sugar screenings,
door prizes, and more.
SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AS HURRICANES HEAD
DOWN HOME STRETCH OF FOOTBALL SEASON
Help give a warm welcome home to the National Champion Hurricanes as
they return from the road to face the University of Pittsburgh in the
Orange Bowl on November 21. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. UM employees and
alumni are eligible for a reduced price of just $10 per general
admission ticket for this match-up (four tickets maximum per purchase).
Bring your football ticket stub from the Pitt game to the Hurricanes
Basketball season openers and receive a reduced ticket price. Women’s
basketball takes on the University of South Florida on November 22,
7 p.m., at the Knights Sports Complex, and your football ticket stub
gets you in for just $3. Men’s basketball starts off the season
against the University of New Hampshire on November 23, 7:30 p.m., at
the Miami Arena. Admission is $7 with the football ticket stub. For

UM RESEARCH CENTER WORKS TO "SHARE"
KNOWLEDGE WITH HEALTH CARE COMMUNITY
The UM Drug Abuse and AIDS Research Center and the Miami-Dade County
Health Department, Office of HIV/AIDS, have joined forces to bring research
innovations to community providers through a campaign called Project
SHARE -- Sharing HIV/AIDS Research Efforts. This bimonthly seminar series
brings HIV intervention programs to public health clinics, grassroots
providers, and social service agencies. An expert panel will discuss
how these interventions can be adopted in South Florida. The next speaker
in the series is Rafael Diaz, Ph.D., director of San Francisco State
University’s Institute on Sexuality, Inequality, and Health. He
will present “Latino Gay Men and HIV Risk.” The seminar
will be held November 22, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Rusty Pelican,
3201 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne. Seats are limited. Contact

MAGEC PRESENTS THREE-DAY INTENSIVE
GERIATRIC TRAINING COURSE FOR NURSES
The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) offers nurses an opportunity
to earn 18 continuing education credits with part B of its Intensive
Geriatric Training to be held November 22, December 6, and December
13, 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

LEARN BENEFITS OF WHOLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS
AT COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE CONFERENCE
The Division of Complementary Medicine is offering a course on the “Therapeutic
Use of Whole Foods & Phyto-Nutrients.” This three-day seminar,
held November 22-24, is designed to improve the attending practitioner's
knowledge of the therapeutic use of whole food, the functional support
provided by whole food supplementation, and the complementary use of
phyto-nutrients for the patient's health. Learn how to utilize whole
food supplements and herbal products for cardiovascular diseases, pain
management, general immune regulation, gynecological disorders, the
autonomic nervous system, and health maintenance. Registration is $150

HAVE A WILD TIME AT MIAMI METROZOO
WITH MEDICAL FACULTY ASSOCIATION
Faculty members are invited to join the Medical Faculty Association
for a day at Miami MetroZoo on November 24. Tickets are $15 for adults,
$10 for children ages 2 – 12, and include admission, lunch, wild
animal shows, and the zoo’s newest exhibit, Jurassic Park, The

WITH DINNER PARTY AT PRESIDENT’S HOME
