"AMERICA'S TOP DOCTORS" INCLUDE SEVERAL SCHOOL OF MEDICINE FACULTY PHYSICIANS
More than 75 School
of Medicine faculty members are listed in the book, America's Top
Doctors, published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., whose mission
is to provide listings of the best physicians in consumers' communities.
Several disciplines at UM/Jackson were represented, ranging from cardiology
and ophthalmology to pediatrics and dermatology. Featured physicians
in the book are selected through a peer nomination process, and are
identified by a random sample of the medical community as leaders not
only in academic ability but also quality patient care.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES OF BROWARD HONORS UM LIFE SUPPORT INSTRUCTOR
EMS rescue supervisor
Chad Brocato was honored earlier this year with the Paramedic of the
Year award at the eighth annual EMS Recognition Awards Breakfast, hosted
by North Broward Medical Center. Brocato teaches advanced life support
throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, including a post at the
University of Miami. Each year, the event is held to honor outstanding
paramedics and firefighters in Broward County.
HUMAN RESEARCH SUBJECTS ARE TOPIC OF WEEKLY SEMINARS
A program of weekly
small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human
subjects in research begins August 8, with "Informed Consent - Competency,"
presented by Roberto Dominguez, M.D., noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman
Center for Child Development, room 2023. Future seminars continue through
September, featuring such topics as child research subjects, placebos,
and recruitment, among others. For more information or to register for

seminar series concludes this week with "Emergency Research," presented

UNICCO AND FACILITIES ADMINISTRATION WELCOME NEW GENERAL MANAGER
Facilities Administration
has named Anthony Iovino as the new general manager for UNICCO Services.
He is responsible for all UNICCO operations on each of the University
of Miami campuses. Iovino relocated to Miami from Pittsburgh, where
he worked at PPG Place, a downtown multi-office complex. He replaces
Kenneth Gomulka, who was promoted to district manager within the UNICCO

is located in the Rainbow Building on the University's Coral Gables
campus.
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS FOR TEAM CAPTAINS OF THE 2001 AMERICAN HEART WALK
Open your heart
for the American Heart Association (AHA) and become a team captain for
the upcoming 2001 Miami-Dade American Heart Walk, September 22. This
year the University of Miami will return a favor of sorts, hosting the
event as a proud recipient of more than $6 million in AHA grants this
past year. If you sign up to be a team captain, responsibilities will
include recruiting ten or more participants and donations for your team,
submitting a Captain's Report, and turning in all funds collected by
your team. Team captains also will be honored at a reception at the
South Beach Colony Theatre on August 22. To sign up as a captain, call

HEALTHCARE WORKERS CAN LEARN LATEST IN HIV/AIDS HEALTHCARE AT UPCOMING CLASS
UM/Sylvester presents
"HIV/AIDS Update 2001," July 31, 8 to 9 a.m., in Sylvester Conference
Room 1301. One nursing contact hour is provided for the lecture. You

DEVELOPMENT COURSE WILL TEACH YOU UM PURCHASING GUIDELINES AND TIPS

SPACE STILL AVAILABLE FOR GIRLS BASKETBALL CAMP
Ferne Labati's one-day
shooting camp will be held August 6, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Knight
Sports Complex on the University's Coral Gables campus. The camp is
designed for girls 7 to 17 years old, and instructors will teach proper
shooting techniques for the jump shot, foul shot, and three point shot.
The price of the camp is $85, and UM faculty and staff receive a ten
percent discount. Call the Women's Basketball office at 305-284-5802

LEARN TO EXPRESS YOURSELF AT EAP ASSERTIVENESS TRAINING
Do you have trouble
asserting yourself? Do you have a hard time expressing your rights and
feelings or do you sometimes act too pushy in an effort to make yourself
heard? The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) wants to teach you the
necessary skills to successfully assert yourself with "Assertiveness
Training." This four-session course begins August 8, noon to 1 p.m.,
at the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. The second installment will
be August 17, same time and location, and the course continues through
the following two Fridays. Participants will develop individual styles
of communication, learn assertive techniques, and discover how to decrease
passivity as well as hostility in various situations. Continuing education
credits for nurses and masters-level licensed mental health counselors
