LASER CAPTURE MICROSCOPE AVAILABLE FOR
CELL EXTRACTION AND ISOLATION SERVICES

The Department of Pathology announces the availability of the Laser Capture Microscope, which will provide microdissection and cell isolation services to School of Medicine faculty. The LCM involves a user-friendly technique for isolation of individual cells or groups of cells from a fixed or frozen tissue section. DNA, RNA, or protein of sufficient quality and quantity can be extracted and used for gene amplification, clonal analysis and direct sequencing, micro-array analyses, Western Blot, and two-dimensional protein electrophoresis. MAKE NOTE OF HOLIDAY HOURS AT
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE BOOKSTORE

The Medical Bookstore will be closed December 22 through 26 and December 29 through January 1 for the holidays. Hours on December 27 and 28 will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular business hours will resume at the bookstore on January 2.

MEDICAL PURCHASING CLOSES OFFICE THIS WEEK;
USE PAGER NUMBERS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

The Medical Purchasing Department will be closed through Tuesday, January 1. The office will be open for regular business beginning Wednesday, January 2. CATCH UM WOMEN'S BASKETBALL AT ANNUAL
GATORADE HOLIDAY CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

The Hurricane women's basketball team will host the Gatorade Holiday Classic at the Knight Sports Complex on December 27 and 28. Bring your family and friends to watch the lady Hurricanes defend their tournament championship. On December 27, the Hurricanes play Lehigh at 7 p.m. Consolation and championship games will be held on December 28. MEN'S HOOPS HEAT UP AGAINST
ST. FRANCIS ON JUNIOR CANES DAY

Men's basketball is back in action at the Miami Arena on December 30, when the Hurricanes face off against St. Francis. Tip off is scheduled for noon. All Junior Canes members will be admitted free with proper identification. HURRICANES ATHLETICS OFFERS "PICK N ROLL"
PACKAGE FOR 2001-2002 MEN'S BASKETBALL TICKETS

Watch the Hurricanes make a run for the NCAA basketball tournament this year with a Big East Pick n Roll mini-plan package for the 2001-2001 season. The package is $80 and includes tickets to any five Big East Conference games the Canes play at home. Seats will be located in the lower-bowl sidecourt sections of the Miami Arena. You can purchase your Pick n Roll package at the UM Ticket Office, located at the Hecht Athletic Center of the Gables campus. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Call 1-800-GO-CANES for further details.

MIAMI PROJECT TAKES YOU TO THE
RACES FOR A DAY OF FREE FAMILY FUN

You're invited to the Calder Race Course for free admission to the Grand Slam II ñ Thoroughbred Racing event, December 29. For every free clubhouse admission ticket redeemed, the Calder Race Course will donate $5 to The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis in support of research on treatment of paralysis and spinal cord injury. MANDATORY COURSE FOR BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN
AND TUBERCULOSIS TRAINING OFFERED THIS MONTH

The "OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens and Tuberculosis Training" course is mandatory for all who have the potential for exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. The course will be held January 7, 10 a.m. to noon, in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. You will learn about bloodborne pathogens, biomedical waste disposal, latex allergy, and tuberculosis control measures and regulations. You also will learn how to protect yourself from infection. The course will be offered again on January 14 and 28, same time and location. For more information or to register, call 305-243-3090.

CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE TEACHES
THE ART AND SCIENCE OF ACUPUNCTURE

Physicians will learn to integrate advanced concepts of acupuncture into healthcare practice and gain proficiency in this discipline at "The Art and Science of Acupuncture," beginning January 12, with classes continuing through May. Classes will be held at the Sieron Building on the medical campus, 1425 N.W. 10th Avenue. Participants can attend as many of the course installments as they wish. Tuition remission is available for University of Miami employees. For other attendants, the complete series fee is $2,600, including required materials. Single installments are $225 each. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERS INFORMATIVE
COURSE ON UNIVERSITY'S ACCOUNTING SYSTEM

The two-part course "Financial Records System" begins January 15, 2 to 5 p.m., at the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155; and concludes on January 17, same time and location. Participants will gain an overview of the University's accounting system and will learn to interpret the Report 90's Year-to-Date Summary, Report of Transactions, and Open Commitment Status. Registrations are now being accepted for the 11th annual Masters of Pediatrics Conference, sponsored by the Departments of Pediatrics and Dermatology. The symposium will explore topics in general pediatrics, pediatric dermatology, and pediatric pulmonology and allergy. Many internationally renowned speakers and School of Medicine faculty will present lectures, and this year's keynote address, entitled "Children's Health Care 2002 and Beyond," will be delivered by UM President Donna E. Shalala. The conference will be held January 16 - 21, at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort. A number of educational tracks are available to all UM faculty, staff, and students. LEARN TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VIOLENT
CRIME AT WELLNESS SELF-DEFENSE COURSE

Sign up now for the S.A.F.E. National Self-Defense Institute Program and learn the skills to protect yourself from violent crime. The course will be held February 18, noon to 1:30 p.m., and will teach you how to reduce your risk, avoid dangerous situations, and use simple strategies that can help you avoid being attacked. You also will learn life-saving techniques on how to save yourself if you do become a victim. The registration fee is $5 and the deadline for registration is February 15.
