LASER CAPTURE MICROSCOPE
AVAILABLE FOR
CELL EXTRACTION AND ISOLATION SERVICES
The Department of Pathology
announces the availability of the Laser Capture Microscope, which will provide
microdissection and cell isolation services to School of Medicine faculty.
The LCM involves a user-friendly technique for isolation of individual cells
or groups of cells from a fixed or frozen tissue section. DNA, RNA, or protein
of sufficient quality and quantity can be extracted and used for gene amplification,
clonal analysis and direct sequencing, micro-array analyses, Western Blot,
and two-dimensional protein electrophoresis. For information, scheduling,

The Hurricane women's
basketball team will host the Gatorade Holiday Classic at the Knight Sports
Complex on December 27 and 28. Bring your family and friends to watch the
lady Hurricanes defend their tournament championship. On December 27, the
Hurricanes play Lehigh at 7 p.m. Consolation and championship games will be

Watch the Hurricanes make
a run for the NCAA basketball tournament this year with a Big East Pick n
Roll mini-plan package for the 2001-2001 season. The package is $80 and includes
tickets to any five Big East Conference games the Canes play at home. Seats
will be located in the lower-bowl sidecourt sections of the Miami Arena. You
can purchase your Pick n Roll package at the UM Ticket Office, located at

MANDATORY COURSE FOR
BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN
AND TUBERCULOSIS TRAINING OFFERED THIS MONTH
The "OSHA Bloodborne
Pathogens and Tuberculosis Training" course is mandatory for all who
have the potential for exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
The course will be held January 7, 10 a.m. to noon, in the Dominion Parking
Garage, Suite 155. You will learn about bloodborne pathogens, biomedical waste
disposal, latex allergy, and tuberculosis control measures and regulations.
You also will learn how to protect yourself from infection. The course will
be offered again on January 14 and 28, same time and location. For more information

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF ACUPUNCTURE
Physicians will learn
to integrate advanced concepts of acupuncture into healthcare practice and
gain proficiency in this discipline at "The Art and Science of Acupuncture,"
beginning January 12, with classes continuing through May. Classes will be
held at the Sieron Building on the medical campus, 1425 N.W. 10th Avenue.
Participants can attend as many of the course installments as they wish. Tuition
remission is available for University of Miami employees. For other attendants,
the complete series fee is $2,600, including required materials. Single installments
are $225 each. Continuing Medical Education credit hours will be earned. To

National Self-Defense Institute Program and learn the skills to protect yourself
from violent crime. The course will be held February 18, noon to 1:30 p.m.,
and will teach you how to reduce your risk, avoid dangerous situations, and
use simple strategies that can help you avoid being attacked. You also will
learn life-saving techniques on how to save yourself if you do become a victim.
