CDC BROADCAST ON SARS
ARCHIVED AT CALDER LIBRARY
Last week’s broadcast from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) regarding Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, commonly known as SARS,
will available after Friday, May 16, in the Interdepartmental Loan Department

FACULTY LEARNING COMMUNITIES ENCOURAGE
COLLABORATION AMONG COLLEAGUES
Join your colleagues to enhance educational skills and knowledge at faculty
learning communities, coordinated and funded by the Educational Development
Office. Whether you are interested in specific instructional skills or more
general development of your career as a teacher and educational scholar, these
groups of five to eight faculty members offer a forum for sharing ideas, discussing
strategies, and producing scholarly presentations and papers. Applications
for suggested faculty learning communities are available online at the Educational
Development Office Web site, http://www.mededu.miami.edu/EDO. Interested faculty
members also may suggest a new learning community. For more information, visit

MAY 15 DEADLINE FOR COMPUTER HARDWARE
REQUESTS TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
To ensure that all requests are processed, invoiced, and billed before the
end of fiscal year 2003, the cutoff date for information technology hardware
purchases through Medical IT is May 15. Every effort will be made to acquire
all requested products and to process associated IDRs before May 30. For more

BLOOD DRIVE HELD AT VARIOUS
CAMPUS LOCATIONS THIS WEEK
Give the gift of life at the School of Medicine blood drive this week. Stations
will be set up from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 14 in the Rosenstiel Building,
2nd floor student lounge, at the UM/Sylvester courtyard, and outside the Retter
Auditorium at Bascom Palmer. On May 15 donations will only be taken in
the Rosenstiel Building student lounge.

DISCOUNT ON FOOTBALL SEASON TICKETS
Reserve your season tickets today and cheer on the Canes throughout the season.
UM employees receive a 50 percent discount on Hurricanes football season tickets.
Ticket representatives will be on the medical campus through June to help you
secure your seats for the 2003 season, which includes seven home games against
opponents like the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee. Season
tickets are the only way to guarantee that you'll be there to spur the Hurricanes
on to victory during the home opener against the Florida Gators. Visit a ticket
sales representative from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Au Bon Pain on one

UM GENETICS RESEARCH CENTER
WELCOMES VISITING LECTURER
The Dr. John T. Macdonald Center for Research in Medical Genetics invites you
to a presentation by Stuart Schwartz, Ph.D., director of the Center for Human
Genetics Laboratory at Case Western Reserve University, today, May 13, 4 to
5 p.m., in Sylvester Conference Room 1301. Schwartz will discuss “Centromere
Activation: Lesson from Acentric Chromosomes.” Refreshments will be served.
WORKSHOP OFFERS TOOLS TO MAKE

DIALOGUES IN RESEARCH ETHICS SERIES
ADDRESSES ISSUES OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA
The UM Ethics Programs present the next installment of the Dialogues in Research
Ethics series. Craig Klugman, Ph.D., chair of Health Care Ethics Academic Programs
at the University of Nevada, Reno, will present “Medical Marijuana: Politics,
Drug Abuse and the Federal Research Agenda,” on May 16, noon, in the
Rosenstiel Building, room 3019 (Microbiology Conference Room). Klugman will
discuss the history of medical marijuana and ethical issues arising in the
complex relationship among clinical use, biomedical research, and government

VISITING LECTURER DISCUSSES ROLE OF
SCHWANN CELLS FOR AXONAL REGENERATION
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis concludes the Gail F. Beach Memorial 2002-2003
Visiting Lectureship Series with “Axonal Reentry into the Distal Host
Spinal Cord following Spinal Cord Injury and Schwann Cell Bridge Transplantation:
Several Approaches and Underlying Mechanisms,” presented by Xiao Ming
Xu, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery,
and the James R. Petersdorf Endowed Chair in Spinal Cord Injury Research at
the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The lecture will be held on
May 21, noon, in the James A. Batten Apex Center, Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh
floor auditorium. Note that this replaces the May 21 lecture listed in the

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION PRESENTS
ANNUAL CARDIOVASCULAR CONFERENCE
The Division of Continuing Medical Education, in conjunction with the American
Heart Association’s Council on Clinical Cardiology, presents the 31st

HIV/AIDS AND HUMAN SUBJECTS
The May Human Subjects Research Seminar will be held on May 27, noon to 1 p.m.,
in the Mailman Center, room 3023. This month's speaker is Dushyantha Jayaweera,
M.D., associate professor of medicine, who will discuss HIV/AIDS research as

OUTSTANDING CANCER RESEARCH AND VISITING
EXPERT HIGHLIGHT ANNUAL UM/SYLVESTER EVENT
UM/Sylvester will host the annual Zubrod Memorial Lectureship on May 29, featuring
the announcement of the 2003 Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research. First
and second prizes of $500 and $250 will be awarded in each of three categories:
fellows, graduate students/postdocs, and residents/medical students. Posters
will be on display throughout the day. Ralph M. Steinman, M.D., Henry G. Kunkel
Professor and Senior Physician and head of the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology
and Immunology at The Rockefeller University in New York, is this year's distinguished
guest lecturer. He will present “The Control of Immunity and Tolerance
by Dendritic Cells.” All the day’s events will be held at the Diagnostic
Treatment Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, second floor. For further information,

INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ADDRESSES
TREATMENT OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE
The National Parkinson Foundation and the Florida Department of Health present
a “Professional Health Team Workshop for Parkinson’s Care,” featuring
interdisciplinary expertise and interactive sessions. Physicians and nurses
can benefit from this conference, along with dietitians, nursing assistants,
physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, and students. Continuing
Education Units will be provided. The program will be held May 31, 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m., at the Hotel Sofitel in Miami. For registration information,

LEARN TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VIOLENT
CRIME AT WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE COURSE
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, three out of four women will be
the victims of violent crime during their lifetime. Sign up now for the S.A.F.E.
National Self-Defense Institute Program and learn the skills to protect yourself.
The course will be held June 9, noon to 1:30 p.m., and will teach you how to
reduce your risk, avoid dangerous situations, and use simple strategies that
can help you avoid being attacked. You also will learn life-saving techniques
on how to save yourself if you do become a victim. The registration fee is
