BASCOM PALMER EYE INSTITUTE
LAUNCHES EXPANDED WEB SITE
The School of Medicine's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute recently launched its
new Web site at http://www.bascompalmer.org.
The site features patient-friendly health information, as well as comprehensive
scientific and referral data for physicians. Bascom Palmer faculty and researchers,
who will continually review and update the information to ensure accuracy and
timeliness, wrote the majority of the site. New features and information will
be added on a continuing basis.
APPLY NOW FOR AMERICAN CANCER
SOCIETY SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
The UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is accepting applications for
the American Cancer Society, Florida Division, Inc., 2003 Summer Research Fellowship
Program. Six fellowships are available to medical and pre-baccalaureate full-time
students who are Florida residents. The fellowships last three months and pay
$2,500 each. Applications are due by April 14, and awardees will be announced

WATCHERS ON MEDICAL CAMPUS
A new session begins with an informational meeting today, March 25, in ACC
West, room 128. The 13-week program is $118 for new members and $105 for continuing

UM/SYLVESTER PRESENTS LECTURE
SERIES ON PROVIDING END-OF-LIFE CARE
Health care professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, and social workers will
learn essential clinical competencies that are required to provide quality
end-of-life care through the EPEC Series 2003: Education on End-of-Life Care,
presented by the UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. A series of monthly
lectures through July will address varied topics in the discipline. This
month’s topic is "Spirituality," presented by Carlos Sandoval-Cros,
M.D., director of the Courtelis Center for Research and Treatment in Psychosocial
Oncology. The lecture will be held March 25, noon, in Sylvester Conference
Room 1301. Lunch will be provided, and seating is limited. For more information

The Center for Treatment Research on Adolescent Drug Abuse continues its 2003
lecture series with a presentation by Robert Zucker, Ph.D., director of the
University of Michigan Addiction Research Center, who will discuss “How
Early Can Risk for Substance Use Disorders Be Identified? What Are the Next
Steps for Prevention?” The lecture will be held March 28, noon, in the

LECTURE TO ADDRESS PROTECTION
OF SPINAL CORD FOLLOWING INJURY
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis continues the Gail F. Beach Memorial Visiting
Lectureship Series with “Neuroprotection of the Injured Spinal Cord:
From Molecule to Man,” presented by Michael G. Fehlings, M.D., director
of the Spinal Program at Toronto Western Hospital and professor of surgery
at the University of Toronto. Fehlings is a recognized leader in the study
of secondary injury mechanisms that contribute to damage following spinal cord
injury. His early work focused on vascular mechanisms of secondary injury.
In the last several years Fehlings has identified the roles of sodium and potassium
channels in white matter injury; a possible link between axonal injury and
apoptosis of myelinating cells; and neuropathology and associated pathomechanisms
of chronic spondylotic myelopathy in patients. His lecture will be held April
2, noon, in the James A. Batten Apex Center, located on the seventh floor of

TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH OF SPINAL CORD
INJURY HIGHLIGHTED AT CAMPUS COURSE
Experts will discuss the movement of innovations from the laboratory to the
clinic for treatment of spinal cord injury at the American Spinal Injury Association
seminar “Translational Research and Spinal Cord Injury: Avoiding Potential
Pitfalls,” April 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the James A. Batten Apex Center,
located on the seventh floor of the Lois Pope LIFE Center. The Miami Project
to Cure Paralysis, the VA Rehab R&D Center of Excellence in Functional
Recovery and Chronic SCI, and the South Florida Model SCI System bring you
this informative course, which will present state-of-the-art models for neuroprotection

WALK FOR HOPE TO BENEFIT
NATIONAL PARKINSON FOUNDATION
Step up and make a difference at the Parkinson Walk for Hope, with proceeds
