JULY MEDITATION CLASSES
The Department of Wellness and Recreation will be offering free meditation
classes on Friday, July 16 and 23, from 1 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. in the Dominion

FREE INFERTILITY SEMINAR
The University of Miami Infertility Center (UMIC) at Cedars Medical Center
will be hosting a free seminar on “Infertility and your various options” on
Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in the fifth floor classroom at Cedars. The
seminar will be followed by a free consultation to all participants. Lunch,
refreshments and free parking will be provided. Please RSVP by calling

CANTERBURY PRESCHOOL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS ON MEDICAL
CAMPUS
UM Canterbury Preschool at the medical campus has limited spaces available
in the infants, toddlers, and pre-kindergarten program and is now accepting
applications for the August 2004 school year. The preschool is located in
the Dominion Tower, 1400 NW 10th Ave., and the hours of operation are 7 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Canterbury is National Association for the Education of Young Children-accredited
and a Gold Seal school. Enrollment is open to all faculty, staff, and students

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
Yili Zhou, M.D., Ph.D., director of Jackson Memorial Hospital Outpatient
Pain Clinic and assistant professor of clinical anesthesiology, neurology,
psychiatry and behavioral sciences, will talk about “New Treatments
for Lower Back Pain” as part of the Conversations about Cancer series
on Monday, July 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. The UM/Sylvester Deerfield Beach facility
is located at 1192 East Newport Center Drive, Suite 100. The presentation

MICROBIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY SEMINAR
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology will be hosting Manfred Lutz,
Ph.D., professor, Institute of Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene
at the Universität Erlangen in Erlangen, Germany. Dr. Lutz will present
his seminar, “Tolerance Induction by Dendritic Cells” on July
26 at noon in room 3109 of the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building. For

HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The School of Medicine-Miami Heart Research Institute Cardiovascular DNA
Diagnostic Laboratory is recruiting both pediatric and adult individuals
and/or families with any of the following:

Lethal ventricular arrhythmias, especially in
the setting of a first myocardial infarction;
-
Sudden cardiac death;
-
Drug-induced ventricular arrhythmias or long QT
syndrome;
-
Congenital long QT syndrome;
-
Hypertrophic or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy;
-
Right ventricular dysplasia, or
-
Ventricular non-compaction syndrome.
These samples will be used for research studies of
genes that may be associated with these conditions. To make a referral

The AIDS Clinical Research Unit, directed by Margaret A. Fischl,
M.D., professor of medicine, is looking for individuals with HIV-1
infection who have never received antiretroviral therapy, are on
stable antiretroviral therapy and doing well, and are on antiretroviral
therapy and not responding, for a variety of clinical studies, including
the investigation of IL2, therapeutic HIV-1 vaccines and several
new investigational antiretroviral agents. For more information,

SECOND INTERAMERICAN BREAST CANCER CONFERENCE
The School of Medicine and UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will
be presenting the Second Interamerican Breast Cancer Conference at the
Ritz-Carlton Cancun in Cancun, Mexico, July 21-24. This conference is designed
for medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, as well as obstetricians,
gynecologists and other physicians interested in leading edge information
on breast cancer care and the most promising clinical trials. For more

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for July will feature Patricia
Thomas, M.P.A., regulatory manager in Clinical Research Services at UM/Sylvester
Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Jay M. Sosenko, M.D., assistant provost
for research standards, speaking on “Oncology Research and Human Subjects.” The
seminar will be held on Tuesday, July 27, at the Mailman Center,
room 3023, from noon to 1 p.m. Advance registration is required

LANDON-AACR PRIZES FOR BASIC AND TRANSLATIONAL CANCER RESEARCH
The Landon-American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Prizes recognize
outstanding scientists who have made seminal basic and translational cancer
research discoveries that have accelerated progress against cancer. Each
prize recipient will receive an unrestricted cash award of $200,000, give
a scientific presentation at the 96th AACR Annual Meeting, and participate
in a symposium at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer

CALL FOR SCIENTIFIC POSTER SESSION
All faculty and other interested professionals are invited to participate
in the Center on Aging's 2004 Scientific Poster Session to be held September
24. Those interested in presenting a poster should first submit a one page
