MEDICAL FACULTY MEMBERS HONORED WITH
PROVOST’S AWARDS FOR SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
Thomas R. Malek, Ph.D., vice chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology;
and Jay S. Skyler, M.D., director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes,
and Metabolism, were among faculty who recently received the Provost’s
Award for Scholarly Activity, created by UM Executive Vice President and Provost
Luis Glaser in recognition of extraordinary research and scholarly pursuits.
Skyler was honored for contributions in the field of diabetes, developing strategies
to prevent or delay the onset of Type I diabetes through immunizations. Malek
received recognition for his research on cytokine receptor function in T Cell
development, which has been steadily funded by the National Institutes of Health.

ADMINISTRATION OF SPONSORED RESEARCH
The University has launched a required educational certification program for
all faculty/investigators and non-faculty departmental personnel involved in
administrative aspects of sponsored research activities. At this time the program
is open for non-faculty departmental personnel who originate, review, or approve
any phase of sponsored grants or contract documents, including proposals, awards,
and transactions. The program will be conducted over two and a half days, divided
into five sessions. Attendance is required and a certification test will be
given at the end of the program. To view the schedule of classes and registration

You must register for the entire program (sessions 1 through 5) at the same

COLORECTAL CANCER TREATMENT

In recognition of “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” the
UMSylvester Education Department and the Colorectal Site Disease Group present “The
Treatment of Colorectal Cancer,” presented by Floriano Marchetti, M.D.,
assistant professor of surgery, and Mayra Lima, A.R.N.P. The lecture will be
held March 18, noon, in UM/Sylvester Conference Room 1301. Lunch will be provided.

UM/SYLVESTER PRESENTS LECTURE
SERIES ON PROVIDING END-OF-LIFE CARE
Health care professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, and social workers will
learn essential clinical competencies that are required to provide quality
end-of-life care through the EPEC Series 2003: Education on End-of-Life Care,
presented by the UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. A series of monthly
lectures through July will address varied topics in the discipline. This
month’s topic is "Spirituality," presented by Carlos Sandoval-Cros,
M.D., director of the Courtelis Center for Research and Treatment in Psychosocial
Oncology. The lecture will be held March 25, noon, in Sylvester Conference
Room 1301. Lunch will be provided, and seating is limited. For more information
