AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION CO-SPONSORS
VIDEO BROADCAST ON ANTHRAX ON MONDAY

The American Medical Association (AMA) will broadcast a live program via satellite on Monday, October 22, at 5 p.m., to provide physicians and other health care workers with an update on how to correctly recognize, test, diagnose, treat, and report cases that could be attributed to anthrax exposure. The broadcast may be viewed in the Fifth Floor Auditorium in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, and all physicians are invited to attend. The broadcast is co-sponsored by the AMA, the Centers for Disease Control, the American Hospital Association, and the Public Health Network.

GUIDELINES FOR HANDLING SUSPICIOUS
PACKAGES POSTED ON THE WEB

The University's Environmental Health and Safety Office has established guidelines on identifying and handling suspicious mail or packages and posted them on its web site. These guidelines can be found at http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/1,1770,2531-1;10562-3,00.html. You also can find guidelines for dealing with an emergency situation at the Department of Security’s web site: http://ihs.med.miami.edu/SECURITY/emergencies.htm.

GRANT-WRITING SEMINAR PRESENTED
BY NIH/CENTER FOR SCIENTIFIC REVIEW

The Executive Office of Research Leadership and the Vice Provost for Research announce a special visit featuring Dr. Angela Pattatucci-Aragon of the Center for Scientific Review at NIH on October 25 and 26. On October 25, at 1:30 p.m. in the Mailman Center Auditorium, eighth floor, she will present "Unlocking the Black Box: Keys to Success for Negotiating through NIH Grant Submission and Review." This seminar is appropriate for both senior and new investigators. On October 26, 10 a.m., in the third floor conference room of the Highland Professional Building, she will be available to meet with new investigators. PHYSICAL THERAPY OPEN HOUSE FEATURES
FACILITY TOURS AND BREAST CANCER LECTURE

The Division of Physical Therapy will host an Open House from 4 to 6 p.m., on October 29. The event will be held on the University’s Coral Gables campus, at the Plumer Building, third floor, 5915 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Come see why the UM physical therapy graduate program is ranked number three in the country by US News and World Report. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sherrill Hayes, Ph.D., professor and director of the division, will present information and instruction for breast self-examination, a critical element in the early detection of breast cancer. Tour classrooms, labs, and research areas, and learn about the three degree programs offered by the division. Refreshments will be served. ON CONTROLLER’S OFFICE WEB SITE

The Controller’s Office maintains the latest version of account create forms for unrestricted , plant, and agency accounts on its web site at http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/1,1770,2381-1;3121-2,00.html. When new accounts need to be created in the accounting system, use the forms on this web site.

DEPARTMENTS OFFER EXCITING RAFFLES
TO BENEFIT UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN

Get something back when you give to the United Way with raffles offered by the Office of Medical Finance and the Department of Pathology. Club seats to a Miami Dolphins/NY Jets game, a $100 grocery gift certificate, and movie theater tickets are the prizes offered by Medical Finance. Their tickets are $2 each or seven tickets for just $10. The drawing will be held October 31. Visit Halissee Hall’s front desk to buy tickets. The Department of Pathology offers many prizes, varying from Florida Panthers hockey tickets to hotel getaways to electronic appliances. Tickets are $1 each and can be purchased through the department at 305-585-6303. Drawing for these prizes will be December 3.

Attention all medical campus employees: Relax and have some fun at the Orange Bowl this Thursday, October 25. In appreciation of your support of Hurricane football, a specially-priced ticket of $7 is offered to medical campus employees. ’CANES SEASON BASKETBALL TICKETS
HALF-OFF FOR UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEES

Season tickets for the 2001-01 Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball seasons are on sale at the UM ticket office, located at the Hecht Athletic Center on the Coral Gables campus. Come out and watch the women take on teams such as Northwestern, Minnesota, and cross-town rival Florida International University. Men’s home games include Big East contests against Notre Dame, Villanova, Boston College, and Connecticut. Employees can purchase tickets for the women’s 15-game home schedule at just $13 for the season. This package includes admission for two adults and three children. Men’s season ticket packages start at just $50 for lower bowl end court reserved seats, and packages for side court reserved seats are only $125 for the season. You also can take advantage of the Family Plan ticket package, which includes admission for two adults and three children to all seven men’s basketball weekend games and is available for only $88. The ticket office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. You also can place your order by calling 800-GO CANES.

UM/SYLVESTER BREAST CANCER WORKSHOP TO
DISCUSS PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND ADVANCES

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Courtelis Center presents an all-day workshop, “Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment: The Millennium Update,” October 23, at Sylvester Conference Room 1301. Topics of discussion will include early diagnosis and prevention, genetic advancements, and psychosocial issues, among others. UM/Jackson employees can attend for $20; the cost is $60 for all others. Six contact hours will be provided for nurses, social workers, and mental health counselors. Preregistration is required, so call Fariba Ostovary at 305-243-4274 to reserve your space.

A program of weekly small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human subjects in research continues October 23, with “HIV,” presented by Dusyantha Jayweera, M.D., noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center for Child Development, Room 3023. Future seminars continue through November, featuring such topics as students and employees as subjects and conflicts of interest. CONTINUING EDUCATION LECTURES IN LATE
OCTOBER PRESENT VARIED DISCUSSION TOPICS

Physicians can earn three hours of continuing medical education credits at upcoming lectures in the 2001 CME physician courses series. Arthur Fournier, M.D., professor and associate dean for community health affairs, and Jack Hartoq, Esq., assistant county attorney, will speak on HIV/AIDS, October 23, 4 to 7 p.m., in the Diagnostic Treatment Center, second floor. Three credit hours can be earned. Walter Lambert, M.D., associate professor and medical director of the Child Protection Team, will join Dr. Fournier on October 24, 4 to 6 p.m., where he will discuss family violence. Dr. Fournier will give an HIV/AIDS/TB Update at this presentation, which will be held at the same location. A total of two CME credits will be given at this lecture. Finally, Dorothy Norato, Risk Management Department, will discuss risk management, October 25, 4 to 5 p.m., same location. One credit hour is available for this lecture. Pre-registration is not required for any of the lectures.

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology is organizing a field trip to Walt Disney World to benefit the United Way. A registration fee of $99 will include transportation and a ticket to the park of your choice: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, or Islands of Adventure. The trip is scheduled for November 9, but your reservation and payment must be received by October 31. A bus will depart from Mark Light Stadium on the University’s Coral Gables campus at 6 a.m., November 9, so you should arrive by 5:30 a.m. Broward residents should meet at the Holiday Inn on Power Line Road (I-95, exit 32) by 6 a.m. for a 6:30 bus pickup. UM/CANTERBURY KIDS TO TRAVEL THROUGH
CAMPUS IN HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARADE

Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters from the UM/Canterbury preschool this Halloween. The children will be out for a costume parade on October 31, 10 to 11 a.m. Their route will begin in the Fred Cowell Mall, traveling past the Jackson fountain and through the Park Plaza West breezeway to end up at the Schoninger Quadrangle.

Hurricane Volleyball is rounding out its season. Don’t miss your chance to watch the ’Canes when they face Arkansas State on November 2 at the Knight Sports Complex on the Coral Gables campus.
