BATCHELOR BUILDING RECOGNIZED
FOR ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE
The Batchelor Children's Research Institute was a featured facility at the recent
International Conference and Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design,
and Construction, held in Orlando. The architects at Garikes Wilson Karlsberger,
designers of the Batchelor building, were awarded honorable mention by the Alabama
Council of the American Institute of Architects for their excellence in the
architectural design of the institute. This international exhibition was developed
by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the American Hospital
Association and the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture
for Health.

Several funding opportunities are offered by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund in
the areas of basic biomedical science, infectious disease, and translational
research. The University may nominate interested candidates for the programs.

2002 SCHOOL OF MEDICINE COMMENCEMENT
The School of Medicine will send the Class of 2002 off in style at the annual
Commencement Ceremony, to be held this year on May 11, 2 p.m., at the American
Airlines Arena. University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala will be the ceremony’s
featured speaker, imparting words of wisdom as our seniors become doctors and
head off to pursue residency training around the country. For more details on

The Web Development Group has launched the new Web site for University of Miami
Behavioral Health at http://umbh.med.miami.edu.
The site's visual enhancements are best viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer
5.0 or higher, and it has been tested on both MAC and PC browsers, including
Netscape 4 & 6, Internet Explorer 4 & 5 and Opera 5.

ARE TOPIC OF WEEKLY SEMINARS
A program of weekly small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection
of human subjects in research continues April 30, with "Difficult IRB Cases,"
presented by Jay Sosenko, M.D., assistant provost for research standards, noon
to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center, Room 3023. Future seminars continue through
December, featuring such topics as “Genetic Considerations in IRB Protocols.”

Join Team UM for fitness and fun at the 18th annual Corporate Walk or Run. Mark
your calendar and plan to attend this fun event on May 2, 5:30 p.m., at Bayfront
Park in downtown Miami. This is a great teambuilding opportunity for you and
your co-workers, as well as a chance to “rub elbows” with University
President Donna E. Shalala. The department with the most participants (family
and friends are welcome) will win a pizza party, compliments of Pizza Hut. Registration
is $23. Your entry fee includes the race, two T-shirts, and a post-race party.

an affiliate of the School of Medicine. The Lyn Pimentel CRUISEade for Life
will be held May 18 aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Imagination out of the
Port of Miami and will feature a cocktail reception, luncheon, and the Children’s

Volunteers are needed for the Annual Lubb Dubb Club Picnic. This event is presented
each year for children who have survived heart surgery at the University of
Miami. The picnic will be held May 18, at the MetroZoo. Entrance to the park
