PRESIDENT SHALALA LEADS SEPTEMBER 11
MEMORIAL, AMONG OTHER UNIVERSITY EVENTS

The University community is invited to the following events to reflect and remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Medical school staff members who wish to attend any events scheduled during regular business hours must obtain approval from a supervisor.

  • Multi-denominational Memorial Service, noon, Retter Auditorium. Bascom Palmer Eye Institute presents a special memorial service with local, multi-denominational clergy, including Dr. George McRae, Rabbi Joshua Kreindler, and Dr. Moiez A. Tapia.
  • A Day of Commemoration: Solemn Convocation and Academic Discussion, 9 a.m., Gusman Concert Hall (Gables campus). UM President Donna E. Shalala will lead a memorial and moment of silence to commemorate the national tragedy. Panel discussions will follow, presented by UM faculty from International Studies, Political Science, the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the Schools of Medicine, Law, Business and Architecture. Topics will include security, the U.S., and the world after 9/11. Call 305-284-4514 for more information.
  • Moment of Silence and Reflection, 12:30 p.m., Law School Courtyard (Gables campus). A brief ceremony will be held, along with singing of the National Anthem.
  • Remembrance: Let the Light Shine, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., University Green (Gables campus). This student-organized event includes a candlelight service with testimonials from student speakers sharing their experiences of the events of September 11.
  • 9/11 Banner Signing, September 9 – 11, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., University Center Breezeway (Gables campus). The UM Indian Students Association (ISA), in conjunction with the Red Cross of America in New York City, is providing the university community with a banner in honor of the lives lost on 9/11, which will be displayed in New York City. This banner will be available for anyone to sign.

GOVERNOR SELECTS PRESIDENT SHALALA
FOR TASK FORCE ON MALPRACTICE PREMIUMS

President Donna E. Shalala will assist the State of Florida with the investigation of soaring medical malpractice insurance premiums as part of a task force selected by Governor Jeb Bush. The five-member committee of academic leaders will hear testimony from experts, consumers, and other stakeholders in efforts to study related issues and offer suggestions to address them before patients are adversely affected.

JOIN TEAM UM “ON THE BEATING PATH”
AT THE 2002 AMERICAN HEARTWALK

Open your heart for the American Heart Association and sign up for the 2002 American HeartWalk. This year’s event will be held this Saturday, September 14, on the University’s Coral Gables campus, with President Donna E. Shalala serving as honorary chairperson. There’s still time to join the cause. Contact Minor Anderson at 305-243-7001 to join a School of Medicine team. All UM parking garages and surface lots will be available for parking during the event. Contact Parking and Transportation Department at 305-284-3096, option #1, with questions.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: If you are a team captain, your team’s money must be turned in and t-shirts picked up before the race. There will be no t-shirts available on the day of the walk. Money turn-in and t-shirt pick-up will be at the Office of Community Relations, RMSB 1140, on September 11, noon to 4 p.m., and September 12, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are unable to make these scheduled times, contact Jeanne Antol Krull at 305-243-4853 or Debra Durant at 305-243-3253.

FIRST ANNUAL UMSM GOLF TOURNAMENT
TO BENEFIT MEDICAL STUDENT ACTIVITIES

School of Medicine students invite you to the first annual UMSM Golf Tournament on September 21, at the Doral Resort and Spa to benefit the student body. Proceeds will support important community projects such as International Medicine Experiences, in which students and physicians travel to third-world countries to provide care to rural and urban communities; or the student-run “DOCS” clinic for Miami residents without access to healthcare. In addition, funds raised will support the Class of 2003 graduation ceremony. With a donation of $150 or more, you will receive breakfast and lunch, entries to contests and an 18-hole tournament, open bar, complimentary gifts, and more. Take a shot at the par 3 hole, where the first hole-in-one will win a new car or car lease. HEALTH CARE PLAN CO-PAYMENTS FOR 2003

The Office of Benefits Administration has announced the 2003 health plan co-payments and maximum out-of-pocket expenses for UM health care plan members. The complete list of co-payments and out-of-pocket expenses can be viewed at http://www.miami.edu/benefits.

DR. GWEN WURM DISCUSSES SUPPORT OF
FUNDING FOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES IN HERALD

Go on-line to read “Make an investment in our children,” a Miami Herald editorial from Gwen Wurm, director of community pediatrics, in support of special funding for children's services in the county. Wurm addresses the need for quality care programs for children in Miami-Dade County, including after-school programs and childcare centers and lists their proven benefits. APPLY NOW FOR UM BID TO PEW SCHOLARS
PROGRAM IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES

The University of Miami is permitted one nomination for the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences. Those eligible for application include current junior faculty members who will not have been full-time members of the faculty for more than three years as of July 1, 2003. The recipient of the award will receive $60,000 each year for four years. The internal deadline for interested applicants is September 20. CHANGES TO DEPENDENT TUITION
REMISSION EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1

A change in the tuition remission benefit will affect the dependents of new employees hired on or after September 1, 2002. Changes include a longer waiting period for new employees before dependents become eligible for the reduced tuition benefit and an extended period of continuous employment before dependents are eligible for the full 100 percent benefit. All employee dependents will be affected by the revised definition of "normal progress,” establishment of a maximum age limit, and amended certification requirement for eligible dependents. You are encouraged to review these changes, listed in the HR Policies and Procedures Manual on-line at http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/1,1770,13610-1,00.html. Faculty should consult the Faculty Manual (Section C16.5, Tuition Remission) at http://www.miami.edu/FacultySenate. EDUCATE YOURSELF AND YOUR PATIENTS
ON COMBINING HERBS WITH MEDICATION

With the rising prevalence of patients using herbal supplements, responsibility falls to their physicians to offer expertise and guidance on safely using these products and avoiding adverse reactions when they are taken along with medications. Registration is now being accepted for “Medications and Herbal Supplements: Dangerous Liaisons?” a seminar presented by the Division of Complementary Medicine, October 5, 8:30 a.m. at the Sieron Building on the medical campus. Participants will learn the effects of over-the-counter supplements taken in combination with specific medications.
