GOVERNOR SELECTS PRESIDENT SHALALA
FOR TASK FORCE ON MALPRACTICE PREMIUMS
President Donna E. Shalala will assist the State of Florida with the investigation
of soaring medical malpractice insurance premiums as part of a task force
selected by Governor Jeb Bush. The five-member committee of academic leaders
will hear testimony from experts, consumers, and other stakeholders in efforts
to study related issues and offer suggestions to address them before patients
are adversely affected.

FIRST ANNUAL UMSM GOLF TOURNAMENT
TO BENEFIT MEDICAL STUDENT ACTIVITIES
School of Medicine students invite you to the first annual UMSM Golf Tournament
on September 21, at the Doral Resort and Spa to benefit the student body.
Proceeds will support important community projects such as International Medicine
Experiences, in which students and physicians travel to third-world countries
to provide care to rural and urban communities; or the student-run “DOCS”
clinic for Miami residents without access to healthcare. In addition, funds
raised will support the Class of 2003 graduation ceremony. With a donation
of $150 or more, you will receive breakfast and lunch, entries to contests
and an 18-hole tournament, open bar, complimentary gifts, and more. Take a

FUNDING FOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES IN HERALD

PROGRAM IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
The University of Miami is permitted one nomination for the Pew Scholars Program
in the Biomedical Sciences. Those eligible for application include current
junior faculty members who will not have been full-time members of the faculty
for more than three years as of July 1, 2003. The recipient of the award will
receive $60,000 each year for four years. The internal deadline for interested

CHANGES TO DEPENDENT TUITION
REMISSION EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1
A change in the tuition remission benefit will affect the dependents of new
employees hired on or after September 1, 2002. Changes include a longer waiting
period for new employees before dependents become eligible for the reduced
tuition benefit and an extended period of continuous employment before dependents
are eligible for the full 100 percent benefit. All employee dependents will
be affected by the revised definition of "normal progress,” establishment
of a maximum age limit, and amended certification requirement for eligible
dependents. You are encouraged to review these changes, listed in the HR Policies

With the rising prevalence of patients using herbal supplements, responsibility
falls to their physicians to offer expertise and guidance on safely using
these products and avoiding adverse reactions when they are taken along with
medications. Registration is now being accepted for “Medications and
Herbal Supplements: Dangerous Liaisons?” a seminar presented by the
Division of Complementary Medicine, October 5, 8:30 a.m. at the Sieron Building
on the medical campus. Participants will learn the effects of over-the-counter
supplements taken in combination with specific medications. Tuition remission
