NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES APPOINTED

John Zanyk was recently appointed to the position of executive director of Medical Human Resources. He has been with the University of Miami for 21 years, serving most recently as the director of Human Resources for the Coral Gables and Rosenstiel campuses. Zanyk replaces Joan Wieser, the current director, who has been appointed as director of special services for the University. Zanyk brings extensive expertise and experience in human resources to the position and will assist the dean and medical school employees in working to achieve the goals of the School of Medicine?s strategic plan.

MEDICAL NETWORK SERVICES OFFERS RELIEF FROM COMPUTER PROGRAM FRUSTRATIONS

Training on computer application programs is being provided by Medical Network Services, with classes covering Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Courses on Windows 98/NT and Internet Explorer also are offered, and all classes are tailored to the specific business needs of the medical center. ENROLLMENT FOR SAME-SEX DOMESTIC PARTNER AVAILABLE THROUGH MARCH 15

The University?s Benefits Administration Office recently introduced a same-sex domestic partner benefit, available to the partner of an eligible faculty or staff member who is of the same sex, sharing a long-term committed relationship, in addition to other specific criteria set forth by the University. A special 30-day open enrollment period for this specific benefit continues until March 15, after which the enrollment for the domestic partner benefit will be available during the regular annual open enrollment period. STUDENTS EXPRESS MEDICINE THROUGH ART AT SPECIAL SEMINAR

First-year students at the School of Medicine were challenged to create portraits of volunteer patients at a seminar titled ?Arts in Medicine,? on February 17. The program was organized by Sharlene Weiss, Ph.D., research professor in the Department of Medicine, and Samina Quraeshi, Henry R. Luce Professor in Family and Community in the School of Architecture and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. ?Arts in Medicine? was designed to encourage students to adopt a fresher perspective on medical treatment and better communication with patients through interdisciplinary exercises. The students listened to stories of patients? illnesses and were asked to express their feelings through art. Art professors from UM, Palm Beach Community College, and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale were on hand to offer assistance to the students. Musicians from the New World School of the Arts Symphony performed to inspire the students to think creatively. A related event is planned for March 16 where medical students will be asked to create self-portraits.

NEW PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGIST HELPS UMSM PROMOTE CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT AWARENESS

Heart specialists and patients joined Eliot Rosenkranz, M.D., the recently appointed chief of pediatric and congenital heart surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, to promote awareness of cardiovascular defects on February 14. Governor Jeb Bush named that day Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day in Florida. Dr. Rosenkranz updated families and the media on current surgical advances in the treatment of congenital heart malformations, which is the country?s most common birth defect, affecting about 32,000 babies annually in the United States.

ANNUAL MASTERS OF PSYCHIATRY CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON MEDICAL ADVANCES IN THE NEXT CENTURY

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, along with The South Florida Psychiatric Society, Inc., presents ?Annual Masters of Psychiatry: Advances for the 21st Century,? on February 25 - 27 at the Key West Hilton Resort and Marina. Speakers from the School of Medicine will address such topics as the impact of technology on psychiatry and advances in the diagnosis and treatment of juvenile depression, among others. DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY PRESENTS 13th ANNUAL N.W. BRIAN CRAYTHORNE, M.D., LECTURE

Kenneth Ludmerer, M.D., professor of medicine and history at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will give the 13th Annual N.W. Brian Craythorne, M.D., Lecture, entitled ?The Coming of the Second Revolution in Medical Education,? at 4:30 p.m., March 1, Mailman Center, 8th floor auditorium. Dr. Ludmerer is a renowned internist and medical historian. He also is the author of Time to Heal: American Medical Education in the Twentieth Century. The Craythorne Lecture was established by the alumni of the Department of Anesthesiology at UM?s School of Medicine in honor of its current chairman. For more information, call 305-585-7037.

ANNUAL MAGEC SEMINAR BRINGS YOU TRENDS AND ADVANCES IN GERIATRIC CARE

The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) and Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) present ?Advances in Geriatrics XII: Geriatric Rehabilitation - A Team Approach,? on March 9 - 10 at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel. This annual program examines current and future trends in geriatric health care. The goal of this year?s conference is to provide information about the physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of geriatric rehabilitation.
