INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYEES
Merit increases for biweekly paid employees will be effective as of the June
6 to June 19, 2003, pay period (2R02) and will be paid on June 26. Merit increases
for monthly paid employees will be effective at the start of June 1, 2003, and

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM WELCOMES
NEW CONSULTANT ON MEDICAL CAMPUS
The University’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) reminds you that full
services are available at the School of Medicine. Mary Remon has joined the
medical campus team as EAP consultant to offer free, confidential consultations
to faculty, staff, and family members. Remon is a licensed mental health counselor
with expertise in assessment, crisis intervention, and domestic violence. EAP
consultants help you address personal issues, including family and relationship
problems, work stress, interpersonal difficulties, intense emotions, substance
abuse, aging parents, legal matters, and financial concerns. Services are offered
in English and Spanish. The medical campus EAP office is located in the Professional

NEW WEB SITE FOR EPIDEMIOLOGY’S
DRUG ABUSE AND AIDS RESEARCH CENTER
The Web Development Group of the School of Medicine announces the launch of
a new Web site for the Department of Epidemiology’s Drug Abuse and AIDS
Research Center (DAARC) Web site. It features comprehensive information about
the program and may be reached at http://daarc.med.miami.edu.
TEAM UM SET THE PACE
AT 2003 CORPORATE RUN
Faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and family joined together on May 8 to color
the streets of downtown Miami with orange and green at the 2003 Mohs Imaging
Systems Corporate Run. Participants from all campuses joined Team UM and set
a record number of 497 team members, making UM the fourth largest team of 521
participating organizations. The UM male and female divisions both claimed victories
in the educational division. From the School of Medicine, Daniel Messinger,
M.D., adjunct assistant professor of pediatrics; Omar Cardentey, patient clinical
assistant in psychiatry; and Matt Duncan, Ph.D., assistant scientist in cell
biology and anatomy, were among the top male finishers. The UMHC and Anne Bates
Leach Eye Hospital finance department, Gables One, earned the Pizza Hut Office
Party Challenge by rounding up 42 team members, led by Sharon Howard, reimbursement

DISCOUNT ON FOOTBALL SEASON TICKETS

UM employees receive a 50 percent discount on Hurricanes football season tickets.
Ticket representatives will be on the medical campus through June to help you
secure your seats for the 2003 season, which includes seven home games against
opponents like the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee. Visit
a ticket sales representative from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Au Bon Pain
on one of the following dates: May 29, June 12, and June 26.

VISITING LECTURER DISCUSSES ROLE OF
SCHWANN CELLS FOR AXONAL REGENERATION
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis concludes the Gail F. Beach Memorial 2002-2003
Visiting Lectureship Series with “Axonal Reentry into the Distal Host
Spinal Cord following Spinal Cord Injury and Schwann Cell Bridge Transplantation:
Several Approaches and Underlying Mechanisms,” presented by Xiao Ming
Xu, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery,
and the James R. Petersdorf Endowed Chair in Spinal Cord Injury Research at
the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The lecture will be held on
May 21, noon, in the James A. Batten Apex Center, Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh
floor auditorium. Note that this replaces the May 21 lecture listed in the May

CANCER CENTER CONFERENCE ADDRESSES
BRAIN TUMOR DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
UM/Sylvester presents "Building Hope Through Knowledge," a conference
on diagnosing and treating brain tumors. Sessions will address surgical, radiation,
and chemotherapy treatment options, as well as guidance on living with the disease.
The conference will be held May 23, 12:30 to 6 p.m., at the James L. Knight

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION PRESENTS
ANNUAL CARDIOVASCULAR CONFERENCE
The Division of Continuing Medical Education, in conjunction with the American
Heart Association’s Council on Clinical Cardiology, presents the 31st

UM/SYLVESTER PRESENTS LECTURE
SERIES ON PROVIDING END-OF-LIFE CARE
Health care professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, and social
workers will learn essential clinical competencies that are required to
provide quality end-of-life care through the EPEC Series 2003: Education on
End-of-Life Care, presented by the UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Monthly lectures will address varied topics in the discipline. This month’s
topic is “Last Hours of Living,” presented by Candace Jimenez and
Fariba Ostovary. The lecture will be held May 27, noon, in Sylvester Conference

M.D., associate professor of medicine, who will discuss HIV/AIDS research as

OUTSTANDING CANCER RESEARCH AND VISITING
EXPERT HIGHLIGHT ANNUAL UM/SYLVESTER EVENT
UM/Sylvester will host the annual Zubrod Memorial Lectureship on May 29, featuring
the announcement of the 2003 Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research. First and
second prizes of $500 and $250 will be awarded in each of three categories:
fellows, graduate students/postdocs, and residents/medical students. Posters
will be on display throughout the day. Ralph M. Steinman, M.D., Henry G. Kunkel
Professor and Senior Physician and head of the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology
and Immunology at The Rockefeller University in New York, is this year's distinguished
guest lecturer. He will present “The Control of Immunity and Tolerance
by Dendritic Cells.” All the day’s events will be held at the Diagnostic
Treatment Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, second floor. For further information,

INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ADDRESSES
TREATMENT OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE
The National Parkinson Foundation and the Florida Department of Health present
a “Professional Health Team Workshop for Parkinson’s Care,”
featuring interdisciplinary expertise and interactive sessions. Physicians and
nurses can benefit from this conference, along with dietitians, nursing assistants,
physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, and students. Continuing
Education Units will be provided. The program will be held May 31, 8:30 a.m.

LEARN TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VIOLENT
CRIME AT WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE COURSE
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, three out of four women will be
the victims of violent crime during their lifetime. Sign up now for the S.A.F.E.
National Self-Defense Institute Program and learn the skills to protect yourself.
The course will be held June 9, noon to 1:30 p.m., and will teach you how to
reduce your risk, avoid dangerous situations, and use simple strategies that
can help you avoid being attacked. You also will learn techniques to save yourself
if you do become a victim. The registration fee is $5 and the deadline for registration
