TOP HONORS ROLL IN FOR STUDENTS
IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE DIVISION

Two School of Medicine students recently received top honors in emergency medicine, making a name for themselves and their institution. Lawrence DeLuca, a rising sophomore, received the award for best student poster presentation from the Southeast Society for Academic Emergency Medicine with his abstract “A Comparison of EMS and Triage Blood Pressures,” at a recent conference held by the organization. With another student honor, the prognosis for continued emergency medicine student research looks promising. Scott Centers, a rising junior and co-president of the school’s Emergency Medicine Student Association, was awarded a grant from the Emergency Medicine Residents Association. The funds will support the student group’s service project, “File of Life.”

SURPRISE GALA MARKS TEN YEARS OF
INNOVATION AT TOUCH RESEARCH INSTITUTES

Johnson & Johnson surprised School of Medicine professor Tiffany Field, Ph.D., with a tribute at Viscaya Museum and Gardens last week, honoring the 10th anniversary of the Touch Research Institutes (TRI), founded by Field to study massage therapy and its potential health benefits. Through her work at the TRI, based in the Department of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine and including other facilities around the world, Field has conducted studies that show the positive effects of massage on the health of premature infants, children with asthma, and HIV-positive babies, among others. The Miami Herald was on-hand for the celebration, and you can read its coverage when you visit http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/2002/06/05/news/local/3401346.htm.
